They were dead. All three of them.
It hit him hard. But it wasn't the first time. When he left Side 3, he used the aid of a young Papua crew to get to friendly space. The young ensign threw his career away to help them escape. When they waved their goodbyes to the crew and entered the re-entry capsule, the Zabi fleet had found them. The last thing he saw as the re-entry capsule spun around was the Papua break in half.
Either way, this isn't what he wanted on his mind. He had enough ghosts. He looked out the cockpit window to the deep blue sea. It was night time and they had just left a hot zone, so it was lights out on the Vulture. Hopefully they weren't being tracked. Was he just a vulture too, picking meat off the dead and the dying to survive?
There would be time to think about that later. Mission Zona Rosa was a go.
