Lights blinked on and off behind David's closed eyes. He was moving again.
Opening his eyes would have been useless. It was nearly pitch black. David wondered if he had been blinded in the course of experimentation. But as the calming click of hospital titles turned into the rumbling of dirt and street, he knew something was awry.
"Stay quiet or we're all dead."
It was a womans voice. Had Marie come to rescue him? No, no no! Marie was dead. He heard her die. He heard the desperate surrender and distorted scream over the radio. So who was this woman? It was then he noticed the smell. Like ashes and decomposing flesh. He noticed he wasn't alone. He was in a body bag! Desperate, he started to move around, but there was another body pinned above him. A trickle of air seeped down where the bag was opened.
Aside from a few confused looks from Zeon patrols, no one made much of a ruckus over a nurse disposing corpses. The hospital was known to be overflowing and little attention was paid to its former civilian clientel.
"Halt!"
An SS Officer stopped the rumbling. Perhaps he would truly be dead soon.
"Where are you taking these bodies?"
"Just to the ocean, to toss them in. Please, habibi, let me pass by, I must get back to the wounded."
"Nonsense. This war might have destroyed all honor in society, but I will not have our honorable war dead washing up on the coasts. MEN! Help this woman in her holy work. Bury them by the checkpoint. Any of you who raises their voice in anger will be struck down by the neck."
The bag was zipped up and rolling began again. He heard a few exchanges between this mysterious nurse and officer, but nothing clearly. Then, they stopped dramatically.
The tat-tat-tat of the AK-74u was unmistakable. A gunfight was taking place. The stretcher was thrown to the side to be used as cover, and the body bag with two passengers rolled into a ditch.
After a few minutes, all sounds stopped.
The bag was unzipped, and both members pulled out. The nurse embraced a grizzled terrorist soaked in blood, an assault rifle by his side. The faded and tattered uniform of a Feddie officer was unmistakable.
"Welcome to Free Istanbul, David."
