“Fouuuuuuuuuuuuuur!” yells Alex as he swings his golf club, but misses the floating golf ball due to someone calling his name.
Alex turns to face the stranger, hopping over in his space suit with his golf club and a box of balls.
“…are you playing golf…in space…on top of a Columbus?” asked the Federation pilot.
“Yes, and you just interrupted my swing. I could have made the shot.” replied Alex, taking another ball out of its box and letting it float around in zero gravity.
“What are you even using as targets?” the pilot asked. “You know, that’s actually not important. Lieutenant Folie instructed me to find you.”
“Well I was hoping the balls would make it to the enemy fleet, maybe knock out a few Zakus…great strategy really…” sarcastically replied Alex, getting his club ready for another swing.
“Forget I asked.” the pilot muttered.
“So what does the ol lad want with lil old me?” asked Alex, taking the swing. “Booooyaah! See that? Wait what should I call you?”
“Sir, my name is Vida, Erik Vida.” replied Erik. “The Lieutenant told me to inform you that you will be briefing us on the mission at 0800 hours.”
“Drop the sir, and Vida? You are in my squad right?” asked Alex as he looked of in the distance, his ball no longer in sight.
“Yes…then what should I call you?” asked Erik, confused.
“Alexander the Great!” shouted Alex, posing heroically, to which Erik sighed.
“Alright…Alexander the great, we are running out of time.” said Erik.
“Hahahahaha, I didn’t think you would actually call me that. Oh that’s hilarious. Anyways, just call me Alex. No need to rush, we have plenty of time. I’ll make a deal with you, if I manage to sink the next shot into that floating Zaku’s skull, we stay for a few more minutes.” Alex proposed.
“This is not the time.” mumbled Erk.
“I’ll say what time it is, don’t forget who’s in charge here!” Alex jested. “You doubting my skills?”
“Fine fine…if he’s our squad leader, we are all going to die.” whisper Erik under his breath.
“Hey hey hey! Not all of us…I’ll probably live.” Alex replied, dropping the ball and striking it with just enough force to make it to the target.
“A hole in one! Alright so its my turn to ask the questions. By your tone, something seems to be bugging you. I’m no Psychic, but I need to know my squad mates, and know that nothing is holding them back that could end up jeopardizing the squad, and thus the fleet..” said Alex.
“Don’t you mean psychiatrist? and yes, I suppose you could say that something is on my mind. I apologize if I offended.” replied Erik, looking down.
“Well feel free to share. You can trust me.” said Alex, turning back to face Erik.
“It’s my sister…I’m just worried about her. She was a communications officer aboard the Buster Ni Go. When the ship went down, escape pods were ejected. I’m fairly certain she would have made it on the escape pod, but I haven’t heard from her. Now with the hazardous mission ahead of us, I am worried if I will ever see her again. If only I transferred with her…she was such a fool for falling for that damn captain.” Erik replied.
“I’m sure she’s fine, and if you did transfer, you may have died among the other Saberfish pilots. Your sister would then be heartbroken, hardly a better turn out. I’m not an officer, but I can look into this further. I’ll make sure to find out for you, and get you to talk to her. I’m also going to make sure you make it out alive. I’ll cover you.” replied Alex in his most serious tone yet. “Now tell me about your relationship with your mother.”
Erik rolled his eyes and sighed once again. “You do sound sincere…for the most part…thank you.”
Alex took another shot, swinging the golf club as hard as he could. The ball rocketed towards the blue planet, glistening in front of him, probably to be burned up in the atmosphere. He leaned on the golf club and admired the sight.
“See that! That beautiful view is the reason I fight. I fight to protect our home. Sure, Zeon has the right to its independence, but at what cost? Gassing their populations and dropping them into the Earth was an act that can not be forgiven. Make sure you know why you are fighting, Erik.” commented Alex.
The speech had surprised Erik, leaving a blank look on his face. Alex realized this, and quickly snapped out of the mood by offering the golf club to the fellow pilot.
“Where were my manners?” he rhetorically asked. “Here, it will help you relieve some stress.”
Erik took the club, hesitating at first. As the ball was dropped, Erik swung. The ball shot into one of the Salamis Kais, ricocheting of an antenna and hitting the port side window of someone’s private quarters.
“…isn’t that Folie’s room?” asked Alex, surprised.
“…I…think so.” replied Erik.
“We should probably get out of here.” released Alex, every word interrupted by his own laughter. Part of him wished he was the one who took the swing. “He’ll probably be pissed we interrupted his tea time.”
“Good idea.” added Erik.
Meanwhile in Patrick’s quarters, a loud thud interrupts his thoughts.
“Bloody Hell!” he shouts as he looks around him, and then out his window.
