The land was finally silent. The large clash between the titans had finally come to a close. The Earth Federation had succeeded in their assault on Odessa. With Zeon forces in retreat, reserve troops performed clean-up duty on the newly acquired territory. Soldier from the front line already back from the front lines, licking their wounds. Some felt the pain of the fallen, mourning, while others gritted teeth from their own pain.
Bryce lay in a bed amongst the medical bay in the Sir Francis Drake. The nuclear ICBM shot down out of the sky took him for a bumpy ride inside his cockpit. That was the least of his worries, though. In such a close proximity to the explosion, he was unfortunately pummeled with radiation. Thankfully it wasn’t a fatal dosage. Over time, he would heal. A bandage was wrapped around one side of his face, covering an eye, hiding a thermal burn. Other minor burns littered his body. Bryce looked to the door of his room, wondering how Arianna was doing. She was also caught in the same unfortunate situation. Luckily, she wasn’t nearly as beat up as he.
The door opened up as Colonel Alfred Donner entered. He walked to the bedside and placed a bandaged hand on Bryce’s arm. “How are you doing, son?”
Taking his attention away from his father’s hand, he looked back to him. “Where’s my GM Striker?” He replied, seriousness in his face.
Chuckling, Colonel Donner patted his hand down on his son. “You’re doing perfectly fine, I see.”
“Well, other than the worst sunburn of my life, I could be better. Kind of wish I could have met Arianna under different circumstances…” Bryce motioned to Donner’s hand. “What happened there?”
Donner lifted his hand up and waved it off, “Oh, this? It’s nothing. The explosion shook us all up in here. I landed on my wrist. It only hurt for a little bit.”
Bryce nodded and turned his head towards the window. “So, we won?” All he could see was a sun bathed landscape. It was a warm, peaceful scene that you would only see in artwork. It was something you wouldn’t ever expect to see on a battlefield.
“Yeah, you boys did a mighty fine job out there. This will help the Federation greatly… I’m glad you made it back alive, son.” He smiled as Bryce looked back to him. “You know, I did make some progress with the GM Striker.”
Bryce sat up in his bed, wincing slightly from the pain coming from the contact with his burns, along with the soreness of his body. “Lay it on me, I’ve been dying to hear something along those lines from you.”
Colonel Donner walked over to the window and got a look of the outside for himself. “Well, I read up on your mother’s file and found out that two engineers on the Striker project survived the Zeon attack and continued its production. I got in contact with one of them and he sounded quite delighted that Laurel’s son was interested in the mobile suit. He said it would be a fitting tribute to your mother if you piloted her last piece of work.”
Sighing, Bryce’s eyes trailed down to his lap as he was reminded of what he… No, what Zeon had done. He didn’t forget the revenge he had to take on Zeon and their brutality.
Donner continued, “However, it will take awhile to get this action OK’ed by high command, considering mixing a special suit such as the GM Striker with a recent defect is questionable. Your duties on the battlefield of Odessa escorting General Revil got you plenty of prestige. They still want to run some checks to make sure you aren’t just a mole.”
Bryce nodded, “That’s fine. That’s more progress than what we originally started with, right?”
“Of course, I don’t mind doing this at all. I owe you after all. I think your mother would agree. Well, I’ll let you get some rest.” Donner saluted his son and left the room.
Bryce returned the salute and lied back down in his bed, staring at the ceiling. Arianna was still on his mind. He wanted to see her so very badly, but knew he shouldn’t in their condition. Just a little more patience. He could wait just a bit longer now that he knew she was right on the other side of the hall. He didn’t have to worry about if she was dead or alive. He was with her at last. Nothing would get between them again. If she went somewhere, so would he. He won’t make the same mistake again. Side 6 would be the last time she would show her back to him. The last and only time she’d be leaving him behind.
