Alex sat in the cockpit of the Saberfish II, cursing under his breath. The Federation Space forces had a 3 to 1 advantage; how the heck could they lost so much? Entire squadrons of Saberfish were wiped out, some of them pilots he had known. He opened up the cockpit hatch, and stepped out of his fighter, issuing technicians to work on the damaged ship.
“If I was only on the battlefield longer…and if only those fuckers didn’t blow up my ship.” He muttered under his breath. He was moments away when the ship bursted from mega particle cannon fire. Then it hit him, he remembered the crew that had welcomed in.
Flashbacks hit him like a bad 80’s film.
There was deckhand Kari, who was perhaps the only woman that could instill fear into Alex. He remembered their first interaction, when he decided to put his skills to use and work on his own saberfish. This unwelcomed action was responded with a wrench flying full force into Alex’s head.
“What the fuck do you think you are doing?!” was the first words she spoke to him, but he could hardly hear this as he was on the ground in pain.
“I was just working on my Saberfish!” he replied, looking up at what was a dashing young woman, both muscular and sleek in body tone; her unkempt hair and uniform, covered in grease.
“That’s my job, and if you don’t like it, you can suck my cock.” she replied, most harshly.
“I don’t know if I should be scared or intrigued.” Replied Alex. “Is this the part you give me your number or we set a time for…”
His reply was cut short by another flying tool, which he swiftly dodged although still on the ground.
“I’ll take that as a yes…I’ve never had sex with a grease monkey before.” He jested, and in reply her eyes widened in rage. Three other mechanics had to hold her back as she wriggled about cursing all sorts of obscenities that would frighten a sailor.
The flashback ended abruptly due a familiar voice calling his name. It was Eric.
“Alex, we have been informed to go to the medical bay for a required check up.” Eric informed, along with the few saberfish pilots that survived.
“I didn’t realize how little of us there are left.” He muttered. “Alright, let’s go.”
Along the way, all Alex could hear was Vida thanking him for his part in reuniting him with his sister, Gin, and how he had plans to talk to Patrick Folie to see if he could have her transferred over. Alex just tuned it out, for there was a lot on his mind.
As they approached the medical bay, he made his way in, claiming a seat on one of the beds. It wasn’t more than three weeks ago that he was sitting in a similar spot, faking illness just to speak to the new hot nurse. This was of course aboard the Sulufat. It felt like years for some reason. The last time Alex saw her was a few days before the start of Odessa, at the time the ship was overflowed with refugees from the downed Delphinus. He had sent one of the kids in his squad over to get checked up, to make sure he wasn’t too ill to operate his saberfish, and additionally to speak to Betty. She was a perfect fit for the beautiful blond nurse stereotype; but with a higher IQ.
“How’s my pilot doing?” Alex asked most casually.
“Oh the one you sent over who had nothing more but the common cold?” she replied.
“Hey hey hey, centuries ago, the cold killed millions! What are you trying to imply?” Alex asked.
“Alright gramps, it’s obvious you only come around to see me.” She pointed out.
“Back in my day, you youngsters used to respect your elders, and I’m glad you are finally getting my hints.” He said, as he then winked at her
“You are only a few years older me…what do you want Alex? Can’t you see I’m really busy?” She sighed.
“Alright, I’ll leave, but if you agree to go out with me once this is over.” He proposed.
“Fine…fine.” She replied, sighing afterwords, for this wasn’t the first time he had asked, but he asked most of the female staff on board within the first week of his transfer, so it was hard to tell if he was serious.
“Whoooooooooo! Catch ya later.” He yelled, turning to face the exit. She then called his name.
“Yes, my dear?” he asked, smiling
“Good luck out there.” She responded.
“Thanks.” He said, thinking nothing of it.
“Everything seems to be in order, you are good to go.” Were the words that brought him back to reality.
“Thanks, doc.” Replied Alex, making his way to the door.
