He was running, he was always running. His foot steps sounded so loud to him as he tore through back streets seeking shelter in the gloom they provided. His foot steps echoed off the walls at him, mocking him. He dismissed the notion the moment it entered his mind. Ahead he could barely make out a fork in the path. He slowed his pace and came to a stop, looking both left and right. He tried listening for any pursuit, but he only heard the sound of his blood rushing in his ears.
There it was, his head jerked. The sounds of someone running was quickly approaching. Any thoughts of stealth were lost and he tore down the left path at a sprint. The sounds of pursuit grew louder, but he didn't turn to look because it didn't matter. He slowed his pace and came to a stop in the middle of an alley way. He took a moment to catch his breath and waited. It didn't take long before his pursuers found him. Three men emerged out of the gloom behind him and he turned to face them.
He said nothing, there would be no words in this moment. The three men fanned out around him, circling him like prey. He took one last deep breath. A final moment of reflection as time seemed to stand still for him. The men around him looked angry, but he felt nothing. It was only another job and they were on him.
The man too his right came in first throwing a high right cross. He calmly side stepped it and delivered his foot calmly into the right knee of his attacker. There was a sicking crack and the man's scream shattered the silence around them. He kept moving as the man to his left charged in. He saw a small glint of metal and twisted to the side. He grunted as he felt the knife bite into his left bicep.
He grabbed the mans wrist before he could pull the knife away and brought the palm of his other hand hard into his elbow. Another crack sounded in the alley and the man screamed as bone poked through his skin. Jerking the mans broken arm back, he rammed the knife clean into his eye. The body jerked a few times as it fell to the ground.
He'd wasted too much time though as his final assailant slammed a right cross into his face. He reeled back only to get hit again. His head jerked and he fell into the alley wall. He saw the man rush in to capitalize on his advantage. He felt himself grin, but there was no joy in his mind. He brought his head forward and slammed it into the mans face. A small crunch was heard and the mans nose leaked blood furiously. His head was pounding from that blow as he watched the man reel back shook. Taking a step forward he brought his right foot up straight into the man's crouch. The man gave a strangled cry as he fell to his knees. Pulling his right arm back he delivered a final punch into the man's already mangled nose. He felt something snap in his fist as it connected with the man's face. But watching the man fall over completely and spasm made it worth it.
He turned his attention to his final assailant. He was a little ways down the alley, trying to crawl away with a broken leg. He calmly walked over there taking his time and watching the man begin to spout nonsense. Begging for mercy, he shook his head and lifted his foot. There isn't mercy in this world, and he brought his foot down straight on the mans face.
Malak jerked slightly as he awoke in the cockpit of his zaku. He glanced down at the console. "Asleep for 2 hours, that's a new record." His words were said like a joke, but his voice was mirthless. Sitting forward in his seat, he began to work the controls. After all, theres always another job.
