Except for the background noise of random machines clicking, there was barely any sound in the room. Yet, despite the lack of noise, she didn't even hear him enter the room and move next to her. The only warning she got is his hand on her, but instinct took over and she was about to pull the trigger before his voice knocked her back into realty.
"-tain! Don't shoot!"
Roslyn looked over at her would-be attacker, only to realize it was his second in command. "What did I say about sneaking up on me, X.O.?"
"I'm sorry, but can you please put down the gun first?" A quick holster and sigh of relief later, Isaac finally stop shaking. "I was asked by the navigator to come get you. I knocked but there was no response and the lights were out when I entered. I even turned on the lights before walking over to you."
Realizing that's probably the reason why her eyes were so out of focus, Roslyn eased up a bit. "Alright, you sent your message, you can go now." When Isaac didn't move, Roslyn spoke with a little more force. "Did you not hear me, X.O.? You can go now."
Isaac hesitated for moment before gathering enough courage to ask. "The crew... They kinda wanted to know how long we are going to be on high alert. Since nothing happened these past few-"
"It'll be over when I say it's over. Do you understand me, X.O.?"
Isaac started to stuttered until an unknown voice came to his rescue. "Just drop the subject for now, Isaac. You know how she is."
Roslyn turned to the origin of the voice, surprised. There was another person in the room and she didn't even know. There, sitting on one of her chairs, is none other than the doctor herself. "How long have you been there?
"Roughly an hour ago. I saw you sitting there, staring off into space. I wanted to see how long before you realize I was in the room with you." Gwen turned to the X.O. "You can go now. I'll handle the rest." A quick salute later, Isaac, literally, ran out of the room. "So, care to explain what the hell is going on?"
"The truth?"
"Yes, the truth."
"I have no goddamn idea." Roslyn eased back into her chair and closed her eyes. "Ever since we've left Earth, I felt a strange sensation in the back of my head. At first, it was like a fly, a little annoying, but bearable. Then..., it gotten worse. By the second day, it was as if they clamped a grinder to my brain, slowly grinding away at my sanity."
"Is it-"
"Like I said, I have no goddamn idea. After all this time, all I can say is that it felt as sometime may or may not about to happen. Like my life is about to be decided by a roll of the dice, as if something is going to happen and I have nothing to say about it. I couldn't handle it, that feeling of helplessness again." She smiled weakly, as she looked at Gwen. "I guess I'm a failure of a test subject. Even after all that time we've spent on controlling my emotion and trying to improve my abilities, all I have to show for it, is nothing."
At first, it was only a slight curl of her lips, which turned into a smile, then lead to a grin, and ultimately cumulated into laughter. "Oh my dear old friend. You have no idea how much you've shown me. All the info I've gathered on Side 3 is nothing compared to info I got from you. To be fair, you get what you paid for, and while the amount I used to bribe some of the Zeon scientist after my initial incarceration is alot. They really didn't know much about Newtypes other than it's uses for combat. You, on the other hand, don't have to worry about such thing. You have no rank, no affiliation, but most importantly, no need to prove yourself."
Gwen rose from her seat and walked over to Roslyn. She placed her hand reassuringly on her friend's shoulder. "As of now, Newtypes are pretty much interchangeable with Ace Pilots. They considered to be weapons, first, and human beings, second. The war will end, but the only thing Newtypes will know is how to fight. Even if they aren't used for soldiers, they will most likely to be end up as experiments. It is not much, but because you are you, and no one else, you are showing to me what Newtypes are really capable of, other than for war. So don't count yourself short, you have done more now than what most people could've done in a lifetime."
Roslyn couldn't resist smiling. "You sound like a rerun of those old Saturday Morning Cartoons. What's next? A giant pink dinosaur is going to pop out of the closest and give us a hug?"
"No, but if you want, I can get Mao to convince Isaac to wear one for you."
