The captain struck the lieutenant again.
"We do not fraternize with the enemy! Do you understand!"
"Yes father.. I mean - Captain!"
The captain struck him once more.
"Captain Knight, boy! You could've gotten us all killed!"
"But father, she was just some transient! Who cares if she was a Feddie?"
Another strike. The father and son had been at this for about an hour now. The son failed to understand. But it was a wonder he was an officer at all. How was he supposed to know the Federation would bother spying on them? Sure, loose lips sink ships - but this was the middle of some god forsaken earthnoid patch of the world. What would they find out - that there was one more tired Zeon tired of doing formations all day? 1st Lt. Knight was a bored, philandering 20 year old trying to make war fun. He gave his father lip-service - but that's where his loyalties ended.
For this trouble, Lt. Knight was ordered back to his mobile suit to conduct training exercises from 1400 to 1800, then march his unit around the perimeter. He'd delegate that work to some no name ensign that got on his bad side so he could try and find that babe again. Lt. Knight made his way back to his squad - the mobile suit part of the North American Expeditionary Force. Or as the officers called them, The Rookies.
The Rookies were a unit of mostly new pilots just commissioned out of the Zeon Military Academy. They were dispatched from Side 3 to reinforce the northern defense - unfortunately, their mobile suits did not come with them. Those without MS were assigned to administrative duties. Those with MS, the frontlines. Lt. Knight was of the latter.
"What the hell is going on?"
Lt. Knight looked at his Gelgoog, speeding around in the obstacle course, rudely crashing into the ground, flipping end over end, then righting itself and cruising through the air. He could see two mechanics clapping at the sight, talking to each other and exchanging a flask. When they noticed the Lt. approaching, they tossed their drink on the ground and stood up at awkward salute. Nervous ticks were evident on both of them, as was a wavering voice.
"Corporal Peters!"
"Y-y-yes sir!" The mechanic stood, straight as a board.
Lt. Knight backhanded him.
"What the HELL is going on here?"
"Just a test run sir yes sir!"
Lt. Knight sighed to himself. How these people got out of boot camp, he'd never know.
"What is the first duty of a mechanic assigned to a mobile suit?"
"To clean, repair, and make sure the mobile suit is on standby for the pilot!" The man next to Peters said.
"THANK you, Corporal Benson. Did I ask you anything?"
"Sir no sir!"
He backhanded the unfortunate corporal.
"Where's Corporal Junius?"
"In the test unit sir!" Peters chirped.
"Go fetch her. And if that unit's not ready by this afternoon, I'll see you all transferred to the infantry division!"
The men shivered.
"Is that understood?"
"Sir yes sir!" they responded in unison, saluting.
The Gelgoog was rapidly approaching. It hovered in air, made a pass over, then landed roughly, skidding across the ground. Dirt went in all directions, including that of the three men.
"Hi, Commander!"
"It's 1st Lieutenant, Junius! Know your ranks!"
"Sorry Commander! Do you want a ride next?" Another high come out of the officer.
The cockpit opened, releasing a flurry of wavy hair and a grey mechanic's jumper. Out came the accented Greek beauty, Corporal Adrianna Junius. The bouncy brunette grabbed a zipline and came to the ground. She walked over to the group and gave a mocking salute.
"Corporal Junius, reporting for duty!"
Her two peers groaned. Junius would get them both killed.
"What were you doing out there, Adrianna?"
"Giving our girl a little test run! I finished work early, so I thought it'd help." She spit on the Gelgoog, polishing a bit of dirt off.
"Adrianna, you know I'm the hero of Zeon. They could call me out at any moment! I need that unit on standby." He fought for her attention. She looked up.
"Sorry, commander. I'll keep your steed well fed," she said, snickering to herself.
The lieutenant paused, unsure of how to answer. Careful to save face, he nodded. "Good! Dismissed!"
Just like that, Lt. Knight - smiling to himself - made his way back to the barracks. Junius had gotten them off the hook - again.
