It was nice. What, with gravity and all being present again Nadia appreciated drinking coffee out of an uncovered cup. Then there was the food that agreed with her palette for the first time in a long time, and most importantly, the people! Merely being around people dressed nicely and different from one another instantly brightened Nadia's disposition upon arriving at New Berlin. She didn't even notice a lone man walk into the establishment until he was already an arm's reach away.
"Gerald," she said flatly, "how are you?"
"Not bad, not bad. Still getting used to living under gravity," he replied cordially, seating himself across from Nadia. "How about yourself?"
"Oh, you know. Here and there, just resting a bit," she said while staring out at the colorful umbrellas that bobbed past the cafe's window. "A bit bored though."
Gerald chuckled and took his attention off of Nadia for a moment to talk to the waiter and order himself a cup of tea. He then produced a plain manila folder and dropped it on the table in front of him before sliding it toward Nadia.
"You gonna open it?" Gerald asked after watching her ignore the packet. He himself leaned back in his chair and slouched his posture after sensing that this would turn out to be a longer conversation than he expected. "It's everything you wanted."
"Yeah?" she asked ever-staring out into the raining environment. "Truth be told, I'm feel a bit of 'buyer's remorse'."
"Seriously?" Gerald scoffed, turning his head to get a good view of the other patrons in the room. "Tell me you aren't being serious."
She was serious, but looking back at her mentor, she realized that this wasn't the appropriate time or setting to be discussing morality and ethics. After all, these things didn't come up in her head beforehand; why should they matter now?
"Eh, never mind it. Let me see what she's got," Nadia delegated, grasping the folder and thumbing through the loose sheets of paper inside.
Gerald let out a sigh and sipped his hot tea carefully, still maintaining his earlier seating position. He didn't expect Nadia to be indifferent to the papers, and he certainly didn't expect her to find moral justification in her actions.
"Look, I'm running a bit short on time since I gotta meet R&D in about ten minutes," he finally said, looking at his timepiece.
"Oh, no problem," Nadia responded, setting the folder down next to her coffee. "Sorry, I'll call you if I have any questions."
"Oh, and if you're bored enough tonight, do you want to catch a film?" Gerald asked, pushing the chair in and grabbing his featureless umbrella, ready to head out.
"A m-movie?" she stammered, unaccustomed to being asked like this, especially since it was from him.
A simple nod from Gerald was all that it took for Nadia's mood to be elevated to that of simple joy, and she didn't hesitate to accept.
"I'd like that."
