The constant humming of the electronics on the bridge of Orange Base was the only sound Nigel heard these days it seemed. The large crew meant a need for order which meant a clear chain of command which meant a need for him to distance himself from the crew.
It was all too logical now in Nigel's mind and this lonely position was his calling now, it drove him, and made his day complete. It all came down to their ability to kill rather then be killed. Like the ticking of a watch the humming of the bridge was the gears in Nigel's minds. Whirling out orders to those below him, never looking out for the best interest of a single person but rather the best interest of the entire crew as a collective. The humming made him short with those he had once called friends, had made him jail his best pilot when the biggest battle of the war was on the horizon. Only a small part of the once fearful, emotional man remained, Prince Ferdinand was dead King Ferdinand was alive and kicking.
Who am I?
The humming made Nigel's head pound, it made everything different. Only Kyle Webb was even remotely friendly to Nigel now, but the humming made Nigel respected and it drowned out emotion.
They need it, with out it they will all die.
It was not simply enough to simply survive the battles any more, there was no guarantee if you just survived that the battles would end. The humming was calling for blood lust in Nigel's mind, for only during battle did it cease. The more Zeon soldiers dead, the closer the end of the war would come, and the closer to the end of the humming.
People are more then pawns, I can't treat them this way.
Watching from the bridge of Orange Base, fighting mobile suits were no more then toys below. Nothing more then puppets in the campaign against the humming.
They need the order it provides. I know what is best for them.
It all came suddenly upon Nigel as he sat in his command chair of the Orange Base, as he rose up in his seat the humming suddenly stopped as he remember something from long ago.
The wind was blowing on that bright sunny day outside the summer home of the Dutch Royal Family that was just outside Rotterdam. Nigel was only about nine at the time and for the most part he was ignored when the family was at the opulent 'cottage.' It was one of the few places that Nigel felt free from the grip of his mother and it was easy to smile here, however her ability to taint the things he loved knew almost no bound.
Unlike the busy life of the Royal Hall, the vacation home provided an outlet for Nigel to much more normal people, people that Nigel felt he could understand so much better then his family at times. It was there that he met a friendly older girl who's name Nigel could hardly recall, but her face was something that Nigel knew quite well the rest of his life. For the first fortnight of their stay at the cottage Nigel and the girl talked quite often as Nigel was becoming more curious of the opposite sex and the young girl was filled with stories about her falling in love with a young man. The young man who was then working off in a colony to secure the money to purchase her a suitable house and ring for their happy life soon to follow.
Yet as Nigel rounded the corner around a barn that was on the edge of the compound to go to a tree where he often sat and read books, he was caught suddenly by the horrific site in his tree. The young girl had hung herself off the lowest branch of the tree and now swung slowly in the breeze.
Sprinting with all his might Nigel ran to the feet of the girl shaking her and lifting her feet, but the girl had already died as the rope had snapped her neck. A note was written hanging around her neck, with a simple note for her lover. 'I will meet you in the stars my love, I won't marry someone else to satisfy a Queen.'
It was a shock, how could his mother do such a thing. Nigel simply couldn't believe it was true and ran quickly away from the body of the girl. Around the barn and back towards the 'cottage' Nigel sprinted as fresh flowers were pounded below the feet of the frantic boy. Through the front doors and into the room where his mother was sitting burst Nigel. Everyone in the room stared at the young Prince who was out of breath.
"How.... How could you tell someone who to marry?" stammered Nigel with a shocked look on his face.
"I know what is best for them," stated the Queen in a matter of fact manner.
Nigel couldn't believe it almost as if it wasn't right as he glanced around the Bridge of Orange Base. The humming sound now gone.
What am I becoming?
Nigel starred at his hand as if it was the hand of a monster and he knew instantly he had to change something, somehow. Standing up out of his chair on the bridge Nigel walked back to his quarters where he could attempt to collect himself as he felt like a fool suddenly in front of everyone.
