Docked at Texas Colony, Side 5, Zeon Expeditionary Force
Athena’s Wrath, Chivvay II-class
Captain’s Quarters
It is nearly midnight on Texas Colony. The only surviving Space Colony in Side 5, it had exchanged hands more than once. At first, Florian Cuyler and his Schnee Weiss had helped occupy it with Zeon troops. At that time, it was just to plant a flag. This later allowed the EFSF to easily occupy it when the Zeon Expeditionary Force had to retreat from the 2 Days from Earth battleline. The EFSF then repaired the colony and kept a small garrison there. Fortunately, the ZEF managed to overwhelm the small EFSF garrison without doing harm to the colony.
But that is just the easy part.
"Colonel," the radio officer," Flight Control reports that the Jinyuan Industries shuttle has docked inside the space colony. Ms Alice McMadden was received by the civilian authorities and she looks forward to meeting you and the colony's council tomorrow."
"Excellent, I assume there were no issues upon her arrival?"
"None, Colonel. As per your orders, no Zeon forces have entered the colony past the spacedock. Only a small liason team is occupying the former EFSF command building. The civilian government is still in control of the city. Aside from the damaged ships, Captain Beria is maintaining a security perimeter around the colony with the rest of the fleet."
"And the Veiled Intent?"
"According to Captain Beria, Scharfuhrer Junichi Ghettid is deployed with the Zanzibar II's mobile suits and panzergrenadiers to guard a potential 'threat' from the Shoal Zone."
"Good, the last thing I need is for a damn purge to start. Very well lieutenant, there is one more thing I need from you tonight. Patch in a radio transmission back to Side 3."
"Ah, same place Colonel?"
"Yes, and be discreet if you please."
"Of course, Colonel. Please standby."
"Much appreciated."
As her radioman got to work, Veronica couldn't help but smile as she pours herself some hot chocolate. She had been meaning to do this for a while but the wild schedule of war had kept her from fulfilling this responsibility.
Suddenly, a ringing sound came from her desk console. A woman's voice picks up. "Hello?"
"Hello mother? It's me Veronica."
"Ah, Veronica! Good to hear from you! How have you been?"
"Fine mother, I'm eating well."
"But that's all preserved stuff. We must send you proper food from home."
"Mother...."
"Hush, I'm your mother and I know better. Your father and I saw you on TV the other day and we can tell you that you've only been eating nothing but that junk they called rations..."
This goes on for a good fifteen minutes. While at the surface it sound like a heated debate, it was in fact a much welcomed return to life before the war. Mother and daughter argued as if they were seated on a couch in the living room. Veronica needed this escape from her position as commander of the Zeon autonomous forces. She can also tell that her mother needed this as well; as a mother herself Veronica can understand the anxiety.
"Oh, here comes your father with Winny. Hold on a second. Winny? It's your mom on the phone!"
"Yay!"
The moment Veronica was waiting for finally arrived as 5-year old Winston "Winny" Wu the 2nd picked up the phone. Named after Sun Wu's father, the child grew up in Veronica's parents' household. It was just easier that way especially when both parents are in one form or the other, active duty officers.
"Mommy?"
"Hi Winny, how are you?" Veronica couldn't help but smile.
"Fiiiiiiiinnne."
"How is school?"
"Okaaaay....Louie called me whiney again..."
"Oh that's mean-"
"So grandpa punched Louie's dad in the face."
"..."
"But then Mrs. Shoemaker and I drew horsies with everyone."
"Awww, I'll have a look at them when I get back, okay?"
"Mmmmm okay. When will you be back?"
"Soon sweetie, mommy has a lot of work to do." Not exactly a lie.
"Hmph."
"We'll go to the Zoo when I get back."
"Yay! Can we go with daddy and Captain Zeon?"
Veronica nearly choked when her son asked that question. He's too young to understand that his father died in battle and that his mother is there too.
"Maybe. He's still helping Captain Zeon so he is very busy."
"Uh-huh." That's the problem with children sometimes. You can't tell if they're catching on to your lies or not.
"Okay, can I talk to grandpa? I think it's time for dinner right?"
"Yesh, grandma made noodles. She needs help setting the table."
"You're such a good boy."
"Yep! Okay, grandpa is here. I love you mommy."
"I love you too Winny."
A moment's pause before a grown man's heavy voice spoke on the phone. "Hello daughter."
"Hello father, how are things with you?"
"Splendid. This war is doing wonders for my blood pressure."
"Don't be like that father, I heard from Winny what you did to me today."
"Yes, that kid's father is about as annoying as his excuse for a kid."
"I don't want Winny to think that punching someone in the face is the first solution to a problem!"
"Hmph, it all boils down to the direct approach in the end if you ask me."
"Father..."
"... Have you met your brother yet?"
A deathly silence suffocated the conversation.
"... No, I have not met Altecha yet."
"It pains me to see my son and daughter on opposite sides of this war."
"Father, it was his choice to enlist in the Federal forces at a young age. It was also my duty as a wife in the Wu family to take over their responsibilities. Besides, last I heard Altecha is stuck behind the desk of a logistical supply battalion."
"Duties as they are, remember that you are part of the Chan family before you married into the Wu family."
"I know, father."
"In any case, I am still proud of both of you. As my children you are fighting honorably. However, whether in victory or defeat, my only wish is for both of you to survive this war."
"I know, I do too."
"You belong here with your son. He lost one parent already. Do not let him lose another."
"I won't father. This war will finish soon and then everyone can come home."
"I hope so. Your mother and I love you."
"I love you and mother too."
"Goodnight Veronica."
"Goodnight father."
But even after a hot shower and dressed in comfortable clothes, Veronica would not easily find sleep. When she does drifts off, it is not peaceful slumber but the chaotic return of memories that occupy her dreams.
