Technical and Historical Data
The Federation was well behind the curve of mobile suit design when the One Year War began in January. However, after months of research at break-neck speeds, they began to catch up with fruitful results. Taking data gathered from the RX-78 Gundam and the pre-production RGM-79[E] and RGM-79[G] high-performance models, the simplified, standardized GM was created. Resembling a spartan Gundam, the GM is slowly overtaking the Type 61 and FFS-3 Saberfish as the Federation's general purpose cavalry.

Prior to the massed production of the RGM-79, there were only a few dozen experienced mobile suit pilots in the Federation. To that end, a number of units were rolled out early with modifications as the TGM-79 GM Trainer.

Designed to be used for training purposes, the Trainer was only armed with the originals beam saber. Instead it featured lighter armor, a two-seat cockpit, and a wider head camera suite, all of which made it much easier to control. However, in an emergency it could still be fitted with lighter GM weaponry, its weakened arm hydraulics unable to properly weild larger bazookas and rifles.

Though some are still in service as training units, many have been relegated to heavy construction and lifting on bases, having no real military applications.
