Technical and Historical Data
Designed with a somewhat different purpose in mind from its brothers, the GP-02 Physalis was the most powerful and simultaneously most controversial Gundam to ever be designed by Anaheim Electronics, filling the supposed postwar need for a Federation mass destruction weapon that did not violate the Antarctic Treaty.

The Physalis was heavily armored, and came with the normal assortment of Gundam Project technologies, with a panoramic cockpit, magnetic coated joints, reloadable beam weaponry and strong Gundarium armor. It could arm a beam rifle, and carried the normal vulcans and beam sabers of any Federation machine.

It was its shield and bazooka that set Physalis apart. Its overlarge shield was designed to survive an atmospheric re-entry, allowing the Physalis to attack enemy bases from orbit. Furthermore, the Physalis was armed with easily the strongest mobile suit mounted weapon of the universal century. A so called "Atomic Bazooka", which took a nuclear warhead and detonated it inside of the weapon, using the energy burst to instantly superheat a massive quantity of minovsky particles held inside the weapon in cold storage. The resulting mega particle blast was directed outwards from the weapon in a tremendous beam, capable of briefly achieving destruction levels equivalent to Zeons Solar Ray. Of course, the weapon could only be fired once before the bazooka needed serious repairs, and it required a strategic grade nuclear bomb as ammunition.

Where the Antarctic Treaty drew the line here was fuzzy. Federation lawyers deemed the weapon legal, as the warhead itself is not being fired, merely used to power the mega particle blast. However, the weapon certainly cannot be used without the nuclear warhead. The Physalis itself is equipped with anti-radiation armor to protect the pilot from fallout from its own weapon.
