History
In both the city states and amongst the peoples of the Tribes, the discipline of writing and recording history is at somewhat of a lack, and not altogether thought as extremely important. There are hazards everywhere in Ourissa and the chief concern is making a name for oneself in the present, and scholars tend to study ether instead of the actions of men. As such, the history of this part of Nimrodel is not very well known to the people. No one really knows when Varans and Ayotya were founded or how long they have been around, although it is generally understood that Varans is older than Ayotya, and the Tribal organization at Harakka predates Varans. The few historians that do exist have tried to suggest that Tanja is older than Varans, but this is not widly accepted by the people.

As far as ancient history goes, there are few notable remembered incidents. It was around three generations ago that pirate activity started at Himal, and in the past there have been two wars between Ayotya and Varans, Ayotyans remembering well that both were started by Varanian aggression, something that is generally forgotten in Varans itself. A long time ago there was a great war between Tanja and the Dry'cha, ending in a truce that has lasted for generations. In addition, ten years ago saw a great Centaur assault on Ayotya, eventally stopped before it reached the main city but destroying the western border fort, which has yet to be repaired. Apart from these few things, and records of the names of leaders and generals, life has gone on, very much the way that it always has been.

However, recenly many abnormal events have taken place in Ourissa. A dark cloud seems to be over the land, and the relative normalcy of activity, even if that normalcy is filled with pirates, angry Centaur tribes and wandering Ogres, has started to shake. The following is a recount of these recent events, such that they may assist an Adventurer in solving what troubles are disrupting Ourissa's natural course.

The Sea Peoples caravans to Varans and Ayotya, bringing imported goods and news from the outside world, begin to slow down and eventually almost cease. There was before a monthly caravan to either city, but this has since stopped almost altogether. The Sea Peoples seem to know the reason for this stoppage of trade, but keep very silent about the reasoning.

A great Sea Peoples caravan the first since they had ceased coming and largest in perhaps five years, is attacked by pirates on its way to Ayotya, and almost completely sunk. More than ninety percent of the goods are taken in one of the largest acts of piracy anybody can remember.

The Ayotyan government calls for an attack on Himal, for starving even worse their already starved import trade. The Ayotyan navy is marshalled and a message is sent to Varans, reminding them of the anti-piracy alliance they share, and asking them to marshall their own Navy.

2 months, three weeks ago

Varans refuses to head the summon by the Ayotyan government, going against the anti-piracy alliance for the first time in history. The Varanian navy is much stronger and more skilled than the Ayotyan, which decides against mounting an offensive alone. The Varanian government refuses to give a reason for stopping its attack, and while this sours political relations somewhat, no action is taken by either city against the other.

The Varanian government funds a rather large expedition for an unknown object of research in the northern mountains, gathering many prominent mercernaries and adventurers and even a squad of their Legionarres. This expedition embarks with full blessings of the people, and after a message saying they have reached the mountain foothills is never heard from again.

Monster sightings, Basilisks, Drakes, Ogres and even elementals, increase exponentially in the north. As many as three times as many monsters are counted by the Tribes, and the number of wild beasts in the areas around Ayotya and Varans increase in danger as well. Tanja is hit especially hard by this monster surge, already at a state of constant lookout for wandering Rocs and the Yaksas.

A Harakkan council is called, set to start two weeks from its announcement. Harakkan councils are not unheard of, but are rare enough, and usually a majority of the Tribes do not go to them. The interesting thing about this council however is the turnout of different Tribes, more than ninety five percent of the Tribes in their totality attending. For the time being Harakka has turned from a small meeting site and holy place to a bustling metropolis, thousands upon thousands of Tribesmen camped at the base of the hill. What they are to be discussing, only time will tell.

Present day

The Harakkan council is crashed by a Dry'cha matriarch with a forboding messsage. "Beware the gold third, and the black second." Unknowing of what this message meant but carrying it in their hearts, the council continued, discussing the increased monster sightings of two months before. All the Tribes had been effected, and it was imperitive that the Tribes redouble their efforts to maintain their sacred lands. Only the Yaksas blamed this on the magics of the city states, and called for war against Varans, but their cry was unheard. With new resolve of their fellowship, the Tribes began to disband, going back whence they came.
