My laptop just hacked up a lung.
It is okay for the time being but I am worried that it's having motherboard problems.
So, cross fingers I guess, I dunno. I'm backing stuff up now.

This may easily turn into a two week break. I have all the game data backed up, but I am going to need to buy a new computer.

I am looking at either a Dell studio 15 or an HP dv7-3160
Thoughts?

I'd go for the Dell, because it is more customizable, there are more reviews about it online than the HP, and its average review grade tends to be higher.

I am a fan of HP's (though their customer service is lacking--most tech support is). But Dell is very user-friendly in that (as Threid said) you can add and remove parts pretty easily. Not so sure about the laptops, but you could with the desktops.

By the way Ket, I am rarely on while away from home despite always being on IRC, but the problem you explained didn't seem like a mobo problem. Explain why you think it is a mother board problem but what you explained to me sounded exactly like a display issue.
(starts up happening with a delay in between occurrence but then continues to get more and more often, mine ended up displaying picture for like 4 seconds then dying off which could be done over and over by closing the lid, since my laptop never slept when the lid closed.)
If you did use the laptop's normal screen see if you can output to an external monitor if you have one sitting around and the cord to do it with. I'll also dig up the site I sold my old laptop at so if it is a motherboard issue we can still grab you some cash =D

It was affecting sound and freezing the entire system, dan.
What about a dell inspiron 15? Any opinions?

You don't really need a laptop do you? You don't have classes or a job to trot the laptop along with...

But fine if you still want a laptop, I'm just saying you'll end up buying a new one every ~4-6 years. Hell, a replacement battery for those things are like $200 and a simple broken ribbon is like $150. Repairing PCs never cost more than like $50 for whatever part you need to replace.
(This is based on a normal high speed PC and none of those quad core over-clocked ones)

I lol'd at "Get up to 8 hours and 1 minute of battery life with the optional 9-cell battery." Eight hours and 1 minute (!)
Dual-booting with your Linux distro, or wiping in favor of a clean slate? In any case, here's hoping you get a quick ship.

Has anyone had a battery last 8 hours ever?
Maybe if you leave it on and never do anything with it...

I can get four and a half if I'm careful. Mac batteries last 8 hours easy, again, provided you're careful.
