Built into the side of a craggy cliff overlooking the sea on one side, the battered city of Mogadishu on another, and deep jungle along the other two, the Atlantic Federation’s eponymous fortress is the bane of ZAFT commanders looking to push further up into Africa.

Though relatively small compared to the sprawling Atlantic Federation installations elsewhere, the Mogadishu fortress is incredibly well defended for its size, with the entire cliff bristling with artillery and close-in defenses, capable of laying down a field of fire from forces approaching from offshore or inland equally well. Mines have been stippled across the landscape in incredible quantity, with many dumped into the ruined city, others buried in the jungle or attached to the side of trees, and plenty in the rivers confluencing nearby as well. The ocean isn’t mined, but the treacherous rocks and currents make it very difficult to approach, and the base’s missile launchers can be outfitted to rain ASROCs on enemies detected offshore. Most of the base’s facilities are contained within the cliffs themselves, with only the hangars, submarine pens and turrets jutting out from the nearly vertical stony walls, the former designed explicitly to be used as giant pillboxes by its defensive mobile suit complement.

Paradoxically the reason why the fortress remains essentially unfettered, as well as why it’s very high on ZAFT’s list of targets to hit, is the monstrous Noventa Cannon built in as a turret with 360 degree rotation atop the cliff. With a commanding view of the surrounding area, and combined with the base’s highly sophisticated solid-state radar and sonar installations, Mogadishu has the ability to blast a target almost anywhere in the eastern half of the Equatorial African territory, preventing large troop movements of ZAFT forces from heading further north. It also acts as an effective communications relay for Federation troops in most of sub-Saharan Africa, making it a juicy target for intrepid ZAFT officers looking for heroic field promotions. The first willing to put themselves in the line of fire of the Noventa Cannon remains to be seen, however.
