Formerly the Atlantic Federation’s Mombasa Naval Base, the al-Ghazi Brigade has taken over the heavily fortified island which acts as their only major port facility. Now referred to by the Arabic name Manbasa, the base’s dock facilities have become rather reduced in importance but the island’s strategic location as a geographic stronghold on the Kilindini river are just as important to al-Ghazi’s regional control of the area.
Once a thriving industrial city, Mombasa escaped much of the destruction that befell northern Kenya and southern Somalia during the Interregnum. This did not save it from being razed and paved over by a predecessor state to the Atlantic Federation, with its inhabitants forcibly relocated to nearby areas off the main island. While already a heavily fortified installation, when the Federation collapsed in the late UC 210s the remnant organization calling itself the al-Ghazi Brigade even more heavily built up the island, turning it into a giant gun emplacement that could easily command the surrounding area as well as Kenya’s only deep-water port. The island is surrounded by a tall perimeter wall along most of its shore, with a notable gap along a stretch of the eastern side where the dock facilities are located. The wall forms both a physical barrier as well as a bastion for the mounting of the base’s numerous defensive batteries, allowing a broad field of fire in essentially any direction.
Outside observers have noted that in addition to the large mobile suit garrison, the Manbasa base seems to be particularly well suited towards defending against mobile suit attacks with its numerous surface-to-air defensive emplacements, suggesting that al-Ghazi may well be more concerned with other renegades than heavily armed governmental forces from other world powers.
