Located less than twenty miles up the bay from Hong Kong, Shenzhen is a major Union naval and mobile suit base that provides immediate garrison and security forces to protect the sprawling metropolises of Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhou, along with regional military staging for much of continental Indochina. The base was constructed by the Human Reform League about thirty-five years ago on the site of the former city of Shenzhen, which was evacuated by League authorities so its territory could be bulldozed, sunk, or raised to facilitate construction of the base adjacent to Mt. Nanshan.

The Shenzen base is built on a large amount of reclaimed land directly abutting the mountain, and is dominated by a large port facility with a huge airstrip jutting out into the water. Artificial breakwaters reach out like straggly limbs to maintain calm water inside the dock yards, allowing for large vessels to be safely moored even during inclement weather. Additionally, mooring masts for the Union’s GN-powered space battleships are also installed in the western areas of the base concourse, while other docking apparatuses exist for other spacecraft, allowing Shenzen to act as a backup landing site for spacecraft that might miss their initial landing area in Singapore to the south.

Most of the base’s defense installations are positioned in hidden retractable batteries under the main airfield, giving a central firing location that allows all of the base to be covered. A few emplacements are tucked away on the bay-facing side of Mt. Nanshan to allow longer ranging attacks as well as to cover the base interior, and are hidden in naturally occurring outcroppings and caves – the weapons are rolled out to attack, and can retreat back behind armored doors to protect themselves.
