El Faro Island is an offshore platform fitted with an extremely large X-band radar, intended to provide over-the-horizon scanning for Alliance Navy operations throughout the Pacific Ocean as well as early warning of incoming enemy forces for Alliance bases throughout Central and western North America.

The platform is situated roughly at the former location of La Paz, Baja California, now in deep water thanks to the colony drops that destroyed most of the southern California coast. Due to its distance from the Mexican shore, the base cannot be attacked from land, and as a result is mostly geared for defense against attacks by aerial or amphibious forces.
