Formerly a relatively “podunk” frontier mobile suit base, the Komsomolsk facility has been largely increased in overall size and significance as a result of the Earth Union’s strategic realignment of military bases. Positioned not far from the impact-widened Sea of Okhotsk, Komsomolsk acts as a regional command point and base of operations throughout most of the unpopulated Russian Far East. As it is nearly the only civilization for over a hundred miles in any direction, the base also includes all major faculties for habitation and support of the soldiers and civilian employees there.

The layout of the base is extremely compact, with the facilities consisting primarily of reinforced mobile suit hangars pressed closely together with administrative towers reaching up above them at regular intervals. Quarters and other crew facilities exist in the long brace-like structures above the hangars, and a large drill ground lies between the main hangar complex and several smaller ones standing alone with their own administrative towers. Storage assemblies and supply warehouses are placed on the southern side of the main hangar wing and were once used as obstacles for mobile suit combat drills, although this is no longer the case given the proclivities of GN-powered mobile suits with air-to-air combat. Unlike many Union bases, defenses are placed in a concentric ring outside the main concourse, although they are still kept below ground in typical retractable mounts as is typical for other Union construction.
