The ESA was shocked by the extraordinary level of firepower employed against their bases around the world in recent months– obviously, the threat of unaffiliated pilots was far greated than anticipated. Work began immediately on developing a countermeasure to these pilots, with a naval fleet deployed as a stopgap measure.
AI Fortress NX-1 is the Earth Sphere Alliance’s response to the incursions it has been suffering recently; it is specifically designed to repel large scale attacks and features an almost unprecedented number of mobile dolls.
The base itself, rather than standing on a more vunerable platform, is crouched lower towards the surface, in appearance somewhat like a turtle, with armor plating covering most of the surface. Massive numbers of weapons, all on retractable universal mounts protrude in all directions, and the new Mark II sensor array is fitted to the base, allowing detection of even GN Particle-using mobile suits at long ranges. It is even capable of firing long range surface to surface missiles with either conventional or nuclear into neighbouring regions– or at least will be once the network of AI Fortresses is completed. In addition, an incredibly powerful and large All Surround planet defensor rests in the core of the base, capable of generating a powerful energy field to repel massive enemy beam attacks. While it cannot be kept up for as long as the defenses at the Atlantic Federation’s Artemis, it -can- be toggled on and off fairly quickly.
However, the real threat of the base comes from the small legion of mobile dolls and elite troops deployed to defend it. Coordinated with a Zero-System enhanced control system of the sort usually employed on Virgo Carriers, the mobile dolls of the base are a lethal force to anyone that should be judged as a threat. The base defenses are rounded out by a complement of elite pilots in lesser mobile suits for the moment, though it is expected that once the design proves itself, future bases will be completely unmanned, reducing costs significantly.
AI Fortress NX-1 is unsettling to a number of officials within the ESA; it operates with minimal human supervision, relying primarily on it’s mobile doll control system, and many worry it might run amuck. Others worry that it is the forebearer of a future ESA military equipped entirely with mobile dolls, with little left for the common man to do but service cold, uncaring machines.
