San Cristóbal is one of the most remote and far-removed bases in the Earth Union, and also one of few that isn’t situated on a major landmass. Positioned on the southern coast of San Cristóbal Island in the Galapagos, the base was formerly a secret test site for Earth Sphere Alliance mobile weapons before the Guild War period, and was one of the installations seized by the Guild in the later stages of their push into North America. While eventually recaptured long after the Guild had been sent on the defensive, that organization significantly expanded the base well beyond the Alliance’s original scope, and much of the present Union facility owes its construction to the Guild itself.

Originally, San Cristóbal’s facility consisted only of the main dock facility and enough support infrastructure to operate a small mobile suit garrison along the coast west of the Puerto Chino beach. Remodeling under the Guild resulted in a great overall growth, including excavating and cutting back of the extinct volcano El Junco to increase the overall flat terrain for extension of the base concourse. Later, a large airstrip was formed via creating an artificial peninsula from material removed from the mountain – the discovery of large channels of highly porous magma flows within the hill allowed for easy excavation of a remarkably large section of the former volcano’s interior. This permitted the construction of a large subterranean hangar from which all mobile suits to be stored safely below ground while still allowing for a direct scramble onto the runways. A tall administrative building to the west of the main runway’s bisection of the concourse houses the command center in its basement, while numerous antenna masts dot the top of the volcano to provide long-distance scanning out beyond the natural horizon.

None of the Guild era defensive emplacements remain, all having been replaced by ubiquitous GN-derived weapons in standard retractable mounts that lie hidden beneath the surface of the concourse until ready to be deployed in the event of an enemy attack. Missile launchers are tucked away beneath the runway under slide-open panels that permit omnidirectional coverage via vertical launch, and a pair of monstrous blast doors can be closed over the entrance to the subterranean hangar complex to keep enemy forces from forcing their way inside.

Because of its location in a perpetually breezy portion of the Pacific and the enviable tropical weather, San Cristóbal is a more than popular stationing point for Union soldiers and civilian contractors alike.
