With much of the East coast of the United States devastated by colony drops and Florida all but obliterated, the western coast of the Gulf of Mexico survived relatively intact thanks to the shielding effects of the continental shelf. As a result it had become host to important Earth Sphere Alliance naval installations along the Atlantic coast, the largest installation constructed out of Galveston Bay and a central point of the Alliance’s Atlantic Fleet as well as its overall power base in the southern region of the United States. Under the Earth Union, the Galveston base has grown even larger than before, and is a central coordination point for defense of much of the surrounding portions of North America as a whole.
The dock facility is mated with a massive airfield capable of sending up large numbers of aircraft and mobile suits at once, and the complex sprawls over a significant area of Galveston Bay, crawling up to San Leon in the East with fortifications along the Bolivar Peninsula making approach from the sea quite difficult. As is typical for former Alliance bases there is no fixed perimeter defense line in the traditional sense, although the line of emplacements along the peninsula bucks the trend somewhat. Instead, the hangars and blockhouses are very well hardened, allowing defending mobile suits to establish lines of defense at their discretion. GN-powered mobile suits, with a preference towards aerial combat, are well served by these arrangements as more static forms of defense aren’t well suited for highly mobile battle strategies. Most of the turreted defenses point seaward, as the base is under the greatest risk of attack from the ocean, though the swamps across the bay present another option. The city of Galveston abuts the base to the north and west.
As it is a key navigation point for Earth Union Navy vessels conducting operations throughout the Gulf of Mexico, there are also powerful arrays of over-the-horizon radars, making it quite difficult to approach quietly, especially from the direction of the sea. A large factory complex was constructed in the mid UC 230s to assist with the increased demand for GN-powered naval vessels, and occupies the former spot of the last undeveloped stretch of coastline between Texas City and San Leon.
