The western portion of South Africa was the site of numerous major battles, and by the end of the Guild War period the vibrant city of Cape Town had been reduced to a virtual “boot hill” of bombed-out buildings and irradiated terrain. The seat of power in the region shifted to Vredenburg roughly 70 miles to the north, and that city became one of the first independent republics in the area that would later join to found the South African Coalition.

The Vredenburg military base is poised to provide direct control and defense to the Saldahna peninsula and its various communities. To this end, the installation is designed in a symmetrical eight-point layout so that it presents an equal face to attacks from any direction. A thick perimeter wall is gradually sloped in the exterior direction and heaped with earth as both a natural camouflage as well as to provide extra protective value against bombardment. This feature gives the base an appearance somewhat akin to a simplified Vauban star fort, except with the gun positions mounted on disappearing carriages that allow them to rise up and fire over the top, then disappear back down into the base’s interior in anticipation of return fire. This arrangement is perfectly suited to repelling a ground attack, although its efficiency against airborne enemies is no better than a standard turret. Vredenburg’s hangar complexes are partially underground, acting as reinforced blockhouses that are positioned in the center of each stretch of wall so as the embarked mobile suits can immediately deploy to face an attack threat, while defense of the base is coordinated from a command center situated dead center in the compound that also acts as the airfield’s air traffic control facility. In comparison to the very modern mobile suits and gun batteries that form the base’s defense force, the base itself has a variety of idiosyncrasies that are quite dated, such as the striped “outline disruption” paint schemes on its buildings and camouflage netting held up over maintenance bays and ammunition depots.
