With much of the East coast of the United States devastated by colony drops and Florida all but obliterated, the western coast of the Gulf of Mexico survived relatively intact thanks to the shielding effects of the continental shelf. As a result it has become the Alliance’s major Navy base on eastern side of North America.

The dock facility is mated with a massive airfield capable of sending up large numbers of aircraft and mobile suits at once, and the complex sprawls over a significant area of Galveston Bay, crawling up to San Leon in the East with fortifications along the Bolivar Peninsula making approach from the sea quite difficult. As is typical for Alliance bases there is no fixed perimeter defense line – instead, the hangars and blockhouses are very well hardened, allowing defending mobile suits to establish lines of defense at their discretion. Most of the defensive emplacements point seaward, as the base is under the greatest risk of attack from the ocean, though the swamps across the bay present another option. The city of Galveston abuts the base to the north and west.

As it is a key navigation point for Alliance Navy vessels conducting operations throughout the Gulf of Mexico, there are also powerful arrays of over-the-horizon radars, making it quite difficult to approach quietly.
