Formerly one of the central bastions in the Alliance’s defense against the Human Reform League, the mountaintop defensive network in the alps outside Ljubljana became a rather embarrassing relic of a suddenly outmoded era when the League and Alliance found themselves forced to cooperate to combat the mutual threat of the Guild. In the postwar period, the strategic re-alignment of Alliance and League forces in forming the Earth Union saw much of the great defensive posturing taken during the previous years become so much useless surplus, although most of these installations ended up surviving in some form or another.
As the Alliance’s political capital in Southeast Europe, the Ljubljana base was perhaps the most deserving of being kept on during base closures and re-alignments that took place in the late UC 220s. The peak-straddling base, with a commanding view over the city to the west and line of sight over the valleys and plains to the east, made for an excellent regional command point. Most of the elaborate Alliance defenses and fortifications, intended to force League Tierens to climb perilous mountain passes and into overlapping fields of fire, have been dismantled and re-purposed due to the obsolescence of their design ethic. In its new configuration, the Ljubljana base is a relatively decentralized base, with several irregular lines of turreted beam cannon emplacements provided with 360-degree rotation and fields of fire. Different portions of the base, including its command center and barracks compound, are kept separate from each other with underground tunnels linking the structures – the airfield and its attached hangars, built in an excavated strip right out of the side of the mountain facing the city, are among the only features essentially untouched since the pre-Guild War period.
The Ljubljana Castle in the city still houses a secondary command post, but this is purely as a for use in a worst-case scenario – the Union political offices remain, however, which is the primary motive for the old fortress’ occupation.
