A so-called “Frontier Action Base”, Gibborim is a Continuation Army stronghold located in an abandoned salt mine some distance outside of the ghost town at Mintabie. While the mining equipment on the surface is slowly reclaimed by the desert, Continuation Army excavators have widened and reinforced the caverns below to allow the transportation and servicing of mobile suits as well as the installation of power systems and infrastructure to turn the mine into a fully functional base. Much of the equipment was likely ripped off from the ruins of the old Earth Liberation Army headquarters Zel’Dovich and former Guild base Gaia to the northwest.
Access to the mine is gained from several hidden shafts in the area around the former excavation site. These access ports are lined with “borrowed” linear catapults that enable garrisoned mobile suits to be literally fired out of the ground, a handy feature in the event of a sudden enemy incursion, or more likely, an ambush-worthy asset meandering by the nearby area. Sensor aerials are hidden in the decaying ruins of the mining facility. The site of the actual mine itself is not what it seems either, with a false “pit floor” that retracts out of the way to expose a single HLV silo. Because this entrance would grant an attacking force immediate access to the interior of the base via the cavernous launch area, the rim of the excavation site is ringed with disguised weapon emplacements, some of which likely stolen off of ruined ZAFT warships that were trapped at Zel’Dovich at the end of the war. This arrangement turns the mining pit into a virtual crater of death for victims unfortunate enough to wander into it, although only the upper most radius of batteries can fire at targets an appreciable distance over the flat-lands around the base.
