The Colombia Sector Command is one of the principle bases of la República del Norte, a member of the C.D.S.A. whose territory encompasses most of Colombia and its neighbor states east toward Guiana. The regional military headquarters is situated within the towering Monserrate hill overlooking the city of Bogotá to the east, providing it a commanding defensive position as well as to ensure the city’s continued loyalty to the Republic and the Council.
The city’s altitude over 2600 meters above sea level gives the base a further 500 or so from its construction in the neighboring mountain, providing an exceptional vantage point all the way to the Sea of Venezuela in the east and across the Páramo de Sumapaz in the south. The top of the hill, as well as its neighbor Cerro de Guadalupe, is festooned with a small forest of antennas and other aerial scanner arrays, creating a “fallen Christmas tree” effect at night from navigation warning lights stippling the peaks. The majority of the base’s structures and facilities are constructed in excavated tunnels that ring the mountain at several levels, with very large blockhouses jutting out at particular intervals that allow mobile suits and freight access to the exterior. The old fortress likely dates back to the Earth Federation’s early expansion projects, and as a result many of its installations are rather dated, although they are also typically quite robust in their simplicity. Access to the base’s interior is gained via a wide road that snakes up the city-facing side of the Monserrate, which offers ample room for the installation’s transportation needs to and from the city below, but also offers very little cover from the gun batteries for “unwanted guests”. The smaller defensive emplacements are typically concealed with terrain-mimicking shells and camouflage to hide their initial positions from enemy bombardment, while the heavier weapons are mounted inside reinforced bunkers that “clamshell” open to allow the battery to attack. While the mountain is theoretically capable of repelling an attack from any direction, there seems to be a higher percentage of batteries facing the city, presumably a reminder to its occupants of the power that the Republic’s government holds over them.
