Description: Dug deep into a massive, icy crater near Mercury’s north pole, La Serenissima is totally invisible to the naked eye. Nonetheless, underneath the crater is the Vanguard Horizon’s new headquarters, a bustling military facility bristling with heavy weapons.
La Serenissima’s most potent weapon, however, is not its defenses nor its mobile suits, but its location and design. The base is shaped somewhat like an upside down pyramid, with the base expanding beyond and encompassing the edges of the crater. The sides of the crater are honey combed with hundreds of holes: some lead directly to the myriad of mobile suit hangers within the base while others lead to dead ends. The walls and bottom of the crater, though apparently covered in ice and rock, actually hold a lethal array of camouflaged missile launchers and laser batteries, plus four extraordinarily powerful Lohengrin positron blaster cannons, all on retractable pop-up mounts with armored covers. Numerous extra mountings await the installation of other weapons, either to replace damaged or destroyed ones, or to simply augment the base’s defenses further once resources and time allow.
Underneath the crater and the hangers lie the rest of the base’s facilities, including a space port. At the tip of the base’s pyramidal shape is the command center, hardwired through cutting edge sensors into every single element of the defenses—protected as it is by over a kilometer of base, the command center is virtually impossible to destroy without first crushing the rest of the compound.
The collective result of the base’s design is that any attack must go through the crater, and thus risk being surrounded by defending mobile suits, not to mention enduring gunfire from all sides.
Perhaps more ominous, however, are the vast, unfinished caverns cut deep into Mercury’s crust, allowing for future expansion…
