The Sibirsky Military District oversees much of resource-rich Siberia, and is also a major transit point for supplies and material coming to or going from the Human Reform League’s eastern front in China and southeast Asia. Though it is served by the vast oil fields and deep mining operations through Siberia, the facility itself is headquartered near Irkutsk on the shore of Lake Baikal.
Though quite pleasant in the summer, the area drops into bitterly cold temperatures in winter as typical of many locations in southern Siberia. The Irkut river runs parallel to the base, and a large hydroelectric dam along the base’s hilltop perimeter controls the lake’s relative water level as well as providing a large amount of electrical energy to the surrounding area. The lake and river freeze over in winter, with the League utilizing subsurface heating elements to keep the water moving (and the turbines spinning) below the iced-over top. The top of the dam is wide enough to allow mobile suits to walk over it with ease, and parapet-like defensive emplacements make it as much of a fortification as it is a power generating structure.
The Sibirsky base itself overlooks the city of Irkutsk just to the east, and the pristine shores of the lake make it a pleasing location to be stationed at (during the summer, anyway). Most of the base’s defenses point to along the northern 180 degrees along the shore, though the weapons mounted on the dam and in the blockhouses on either side can be turned to fire over the lake. The built-up base and city rapidly give way to thick boreal forests and rolling hills, with the base’s perimeter wall and defensive positions atop the hill visible for miles and miles in any direction. The forested areas around the base are heavily mined, with patrol routes changing frequently to mix up the “safe” and “unsafe” approaches through the forest to the base.
Present: Repairs to Sibirsky have finally been completed, and it’s been heavily reinforced with experienced forces and state of the art mobile suits. A number of GN Beam Cannons, the same as the turrets on the GN Battlecruiser, have also been installed in various strategic locations.
