Positioned on the bitterly cold Kola Peninsula, the Earth Union’s Murmansk base was originally constructed under the auspices of the Human Reform League to act as a reinforced military bastion against Alliance occupied Finland a few hundred miles away. Unlike a number of other former League bases that have had a new life under the Union, the remote Murmansk base actually retains much of its League-era trappings, including a number of the elaborate fortifications.

Unlike during the pre-unification period, the Murmansk base can now act as a port facility year-round thanks to a number of so-called “heat spikes” that have been driven into the bay, which use a combination of thermal energy and a chemical anti-freezing solution to keep the water relatively clear of ice during winter months. While none of the League-era defenses remain, the tall beam-ablative perimeter wall is still in place, as are the relatively disused access paths, the Union’s GN-powered mobile suits having little need for static emplacements to hide behind. Furthermore, the outlandishly large minefield remains in place as well, simply as a matter of being too dangerous to effectively clear without resorting to a massive amount of ordnance.

Similar to most Union bases, a variety of turreted beam cannons are installed on retractable pedestal mounts, allowing them considerable variation in overall height. The emplacements at the Murmansk base are provided with extra tall elevators, allowing them to reach up and above the old perimeter wall, but are otherwise identical to the type seen all over the Earth. Once incorporated into the defense network of the base, the city of Murmansk itself has been essentially deserted, with many of the old buildings (derisively referred to as “prolehousing” by the first Alliance soldiers stationed there) since demolished or converted into office and administrative functions.
