Formerly the a front-line Human Reform League mobile suit base, Korkut is well-defended by its placement in a former crater lake in the Turkish far east that was drained and smoothed over, allowing the entire base to be built with heavy natural walls on three of four sides – natural erosion collapsed the southwestern wall of the crater centuries before, creating a ramp that permits access to the base proper from ground level. Since it is well away from the Union’s territorial frontier, the base’s importance has decreased somewhat, and is now primarily used as a staging point for military patrols and operations throughout Anatolia.

Korkut is a significant distance from any major population centers, and as a result it is a small city unto itself with full facilities for habitation of the soldiers and civilians stationed there. The base concourse occupies much of the bottom of the crater, allowing the base to be relatively spread out without reaching very high off the ground, enabling it to remain hidden below the floor of the desert until approaching enemies are virtually on top of it. The low altitude of most of the base structures allows its mobile suits to be deployed right along major corridors where they are able to fight without fear of their weapons striking hitting other buildings, although the flight capabilities of the Union’s GN-powered units leaves this faculty mostly unused. There wasn’t enough room to construct an airfield, but a drill/parade ground near the end of the crater slope allows for Guyana-class ships to put down safely.

Most of the base’s defenses aren’t actually placed in and around the installation as is typical for other Union bases. Instead, the retractable turrets and vertical missile cells are hidden and disguised as natural terrain features around the perimeter of the crater. This permits the base to open fire on approaching enemy forces long before it is exposed directly, especially compared to ground-based mobile weapons. Because of the remoteness of the base, mines placed by the League are still arranged about the desert in the base’s vicinity – these have been supplemented by much more efficient Union-designed bombs relying on GN particle warheads.
