Situated in the pleasant Tuscan coastline, Orbetello was formerly a crucial link in the Earth Sphere Alliance’s defense and manufacturing complexes. In addition to serving as a distribution center for the mobile suit factories on Corsica island, it also housed the Alliance’s famous Mobile Suit Training Center, with exhaustive training grounds in the rocky hills behind the base. With the destruction of the Corsica base by the Guild, the adoption of GN-powered mobile suits by the Alliance, and later the construction of the monstrous Gibraltar facility by the Earth Union, the installation was essentially outmoded. It now serves the Union as little more than a dock facility for ships and a seat of authority on the Italian peninsula.

The base lies across from the famous Orbetello lagoon, through which a channel has been dredged to allow ships to access the dock facilities. The light-colored buildings blend in with the sandstone cliffs and hills behind the base – in years past, countless trainee pilots had accidentally thrown their Leos into valleys and depressions while undergoing mobility training, while the former drill grounds and firing ranges are essentially deserted today. The old Alliance-period sensors and defenses have been dismantled and replaced by more modern and functional models, with turreted beam cannons installed in fortified positions behind the base to grant firing positions over the top of the installation’s structures and out into the lagoon. The western perimeter of the installation is formed by the airfield, which runs along the lagoon on its latitudinal axis.
