A further improvement on the Gaia Gear α, the Gaia Gear Delta (GGΔ) represents an improvement on even its β form. The systems of the Gaia Gear have been overhauled entirely, the antiquated Psycommu, and M-Craft systems replaced with the more sophisticated Psycoframe system, and Minovsky Drive, with all the benefits each offers. Improved is also the Δ’s thruster performance, to compensate for the added weight of the new systems, but also the number of apogee motors has been nearly doubled to increase performance in a zero-g environment. For atmospheric combat, the Gaia Gear Δ has also been equipped with a variable surface system, controlled through the Psycoframe System, able to alter almost every inch of the Gaia’s surface to increase responsiveness when flying, even at the most ridiculous speeds. Also included as a new piece of optional equipment is a new ramjet styled booster. A massive version of the same rockets that make missiles so fast, the booster offers constant acceleration (something the Minovsky Drive cannot do), allowing the Gaia Gear Δ to move three spaces in a single day, as opposed to merely two. While the Δ doesn’t lose any maneuverability while using the booster (thanks to the variable surface system, and minovsky drive), if attacked while using the booster, it is incapable of transforming into its mobile suit mode, having to sortie in its fighter mode.
A minor improvement, the E.C.M. pod, formerly a static piece of equipment when used, can now be deployed as a remote sensor, able to not only generate a field that scrambles most basic sensors (excluding visual sensors), but also relays information back to the Gaia Gear’s computer directly.
Largely the same, the Δ’s armaments have been improved for greater efficiency. Changes include switching out the standard vulcan guns, for beam vulcans, including a second set of 20mm gatling guns, and combining the missile pods, and funnel racks into a single unit. Gone are the fairly standard needle missiles, and in are the cluster missile launchers. Each pod equip two cluster missiles, which break apart mid flight into 30 separate guided mini-missiles, allowing the Gaia Gear to produce a staggering 120 micro-missiles in nearly no time at all. Also streamlined are the optional armaments. Losing its beam rifle entirely, the Gaia Gear now boasts a rain rifle. Rifle in name only, the rail rifle is actually a long range rail cannon, firing a solid metal slug at fantastic speeds, with pinpoint accuracy. While offering better range, and penetration against hardened objects in atmospheric conditions (as compared to the mega launcher), it is not well suited to close range combat. For close range combat, the Gaia Gear Δ now boasts a set of beam machine guns, a set of high-power, rapid firing, beam handguns.
As previously, the optional armaments (excluding the E.C.M.R. pod which is mounted to the back in both mobile suit, and fighter modes), can only be equipped one at a time, the chosen weapon mounting to a turret beneath the nose of the jet for use in fighter mode.
For defensive purposes, the Δ still maintains its I-Field beam barrier, but no longer equips beam shield generators. What it has gained though is the Minovsky Drive System, which not only increases acceleration to ludicrous speeds temporarily, but also allows the GGD to generate the so called “wings of light” or “beam wings.” These wings are able to function not only as an impromptu defensive measure, but also can be used as improvised cutting weapons as well.
