ZAFT’s second major installation in Australia was actually the site of its first Earth landing, which touched down near the badly wrecked city of Darwin. The damage inflicted by rapidly rising, then falling, sea levels as a result of the colony drop had actually precipitously deepened the natural harbor there, making it an ideal spot for a staging ground for ZAFT marine assets.

Named in honor of German physicist Jürgen Ehlers, the Earth Liberation Navy Base features a number of large, heavily protected submarine pens that run in a row like steel turtles jutting out into the ocean. Anticipating it would be a very appealing target to attack, ZAFT constructed hardened structures at the site, with the hangars and command center partially sunken into the ground and featuring thick, sloping exterior walls with much of an appearance of solidity and each sprouting a few antiaircraft gun emplacements. A low perimeter wall provides cover for kneeling mobile suits (or ZuOOTs in tank configuration) and is virtually festooned with railguns for accurate neutralization of approaching land targets. A large gate to the south is built to the scale of ZAFT land battleships, and a humorous joke pervades base personnel about the “Road to Zel”, referring to the telltale signs of land battleships patrolling the desert between Ehlers and the ZAFT headquarters Zel’dovich.
