Boaz, named after a Biblical figure in the Book of Ruth, was formerly a large-scale asteroid fortress designed to protect obvious approaches to PLANT. In this capacity, it served as a bastion of defense for ZAFT’s homeland, with a massive contingent of mobile suits as well as bristling with artillery and beam weapons of all sort to turn it into a veritable porcupine any aggressor would have to swallow before moving on to PLANT itself.

Near the end of the Space War, the entire installation was silenced by the Space Revolutionary Army’s horrifying Geminuss mobile armor, and investigations as to the facility’s condition could not be carried out until after the ceasefire and armistice between PLANT and Cloud. With its entire crew massacred, the fortress had degraded significantly in the intervening months, and was evidently ripe with chemical spills and radiation leaks, among other things (a Newtype pilot later reported that the entire area around the installation was filled with terrible psychic energies left behind by the murdered Coordinators as a result of the Geminuss’ attack). To wit, with ZAFT’s demobilization imminent, the decision was made not to return the fortress to operational condition.

While still within PLANT’s immediate area of influence, Boaz is now considered little more than a navigational hazard. Plans to turn the fortress into a war memorial have been discussed, but nothing significant has ever come of it. Because there is still a large amount of military hardware at the fortress – although how much is salvageable is questionable – regular patrols from the PLANT National Guard routinely pass by the area to make sure no third parties are trying to infiltrate the fortress’ position.
