“Wiking”, derived from the German pronunciation of Viking, is the code-name of an otherwise nameless secret base constructed at the far north of Greenland, beneath the Sermersuaq (Greenland ice sheet). Its purpose is essentially a secret to most Alliance personnel, with only the high-ranking officers knowing of its existence.

The base’s function is twofold. Firstly, it is the site of a high security prison for people the Alliance would simply rather disappear, but for whatever reason can’t dump in the ocean. Secondly, a state-of-the-art mass driver has been constructed beneath the ice sheet, the only one of its kind employed by the Alliance. With only a single blast door on the surface, usually left to freeze over intentionally, high priority cargoes and vessels can be sent into space with relative secrecy. Without an airfield, there’s essentially no ready sign that anything exists at the location at all, with the mobile suit elevators and defensive emplacements all well-camouflaged to blend in with the flat, sweeping expanses of white nothing.

A long subsurface channel digs out below the glacier and into the Arctic Ocean, allowing submarines to visit the base. The channel entrance is also secured by a camouflaged blast door, and the level of water inside can be adjusted remotely – ostensibly this allows for disturbances in the oceanic tides, but also makes a handy security feature in the off chance that something unwanted should slip in. In spite of the secrecy of its location, the Alliance has seen fit to deploy several mobile dolls as part of the garrison. This is as much a precaution against insurrection as it is a security measure, as the mobile dolls could be turned against the base’s own staff should they go rogue or attempt to join their heavily fortified, spaceport-equipped base to an opposing faction.
