Originally a small airfield and fueling base for the Earth Sphere Alliance, Barclay was seized by the Space Revolutionary Army during the beginning of their assault on the planet and served as that group’s base of operations throughout the conflict. It eventually fell under the control of the Guild where it remained until the reoccupation of Antarctica by the Human Reform League in the UC 220s. Now an Earth Union installation, the base is essentially the Union’s overall coordination center for the Antarctic continent.

The Alliance-built surface structures, consisting of a few hangars, an airport with control assets, warehouses, and the massive fuel storage tanks remain in place, but are essentially decoys – the proper works of the base are stored below ground. What looks like a small, lightly defended outpost abutted next to glaciers that stretch to the Weddell Sea is simply a cover for the base proper which is well below the surface. Massive excavations have been conducted below ground and well into the glacier itself, where the Union maintains a large defense force as well as command and control facilities that direct the flow of communication across the entire Antarctic. The Space Revolutionary Army installed a monstrous mass driver within the glacier itself, the never-thawing ice serving as an efficient heat sink for the magnetic accelerators; a camouflaged, thermally-shielded blast door set into the side of a sheer glacial face some miles away sends the base’s outgoing vessels towards orbit. This feature proved especially useful for the Guild during its last days as it allowed many of its members to escape to space – the Earth Union has essentially relegated it to a role as an axillary space port, although it is still used with some regularity.

Defensive positions are concealed within camouflaged bunkers and only emerge when firing, making the base far more dangerous to approach than it actually appears. Hardened elevators allow defensive units to quickly deploy into the old Alliance base’s concourse or to emerge from the glacier for flanking maneuvers. The Alliance’s old X-band radar site has been supplemented by much newer active phased array scanners, providing over-the-horizon capability to warn of incoming intruders at great distance.
