The Bagram Air Defense Base is possibly one of the Earth Union’s least popular postings, with blistering summers and frigid winters combined with an almost total lack of strategic importance that ensures very little in the way of a break from the boredom of long guard shifts and combat air patrols. Ostensibly, the League-era base is still maintained to provide a central staging point for operations throughout Afghanistan and the nearby territories south of Kazakhstan.

Most of the base’s infrastructure dates from the League expansions into South Asia in the late UC 200s, and the major buildings are constructed in a line on the northern side of the airfield, with typical League-style reinforced mobile suit hangars focused on the western terminus of the main runway. Fixed fortifications at the base are unusually heavy, considering how far removed the base is from so-called “hot spots” where enemy action is frequent – this is intended to best exploit the installation’s natural geographic defenses, as the enormous Hindu Kush mountains that frame the Parwan plateau make approaching the facility’s local environment perilous by land, while the usually clear skies provide easy targeting for enemy assets attempting to take an aerial route over the mountains. Most of the base’s heavier defensive emplacements are hidden below the surface of the runway in retractable turrets per Union standards, but there’s also a significant number of positions tucked in throughout the base’s facilities as well as in the flatlands in the facility’s immediate surroundings.

Extensive minelaying has occurred over the decades since the League initially seized control of the area, ranging from small antipersonnel bombs to giant devices meant to hole land battleships, and travel outside the immediate area outside the base is not encouraged.
