About a hundred and eighty miles from Lhasa, the Basong Lake Special Operations Complex straddles one bank of an improbably picturesque body of water high up in the Tibetan plateau. A former Human Reform League base, Basong Lake was established due to its distance from large population centers and the highly varied terrain in the immediate vicinity, which made it suitable as a testing ground for new mobile weapons as well as a training center for the League’s special forces. It continues in this capacity to date, although reorganizations since the formation of the Earth Union have reduced some of its importance in favor of the MSRΛD installation in Greenland. Nevertheless, the installation has continued to serve an influx of supplies and personnel at a steady rate ever since the end of the Guild War.

The Basong Lake base initially appears to have more in common with an Earth Sphere Alliance installation that one of the gigantic fortresses favored by the Human Reform League, with large above-ground buildings and an extensive airport that roughly bisects the base proper. The League defensive emplacements have been dismantled in favor of modern Union GN technology, which are positioned in typical retractable positions on the runway and other open areas of the base infrastructure, allowing for covering fire from attacks in any direction. Mobile suit hangars are installed in reinforced blockhouses along the airfield, and are little changed from their time of housing Tierens except via the addition of GN particle fueling apparatuses. Most other aspects of the installation, save for its location, are relatively common to most Union bases.
