Technical and History: Great Lakes II is the name given to a series of recently constructed complexes operated by the Earth Sphere Alliance along the western part of the eponymous bodies of water in North America. The facility is a distribution hub for supplies coming in and raw materials moving out, as well as a naval installation butting up against the city of Chicago, which has survived the Interregnum in reasonably good condition.
The surface facilities include an expansive port facility, which often transits raw materials mined out from below as well as servicing Navy ships in the lake, as well as a full-size airfield along the shallower parts of the coast, and a large wall cordons off the base from the city itself. Defensive emplacements stipple the top of the wall, the height of the barricade allowing them to fire over the tops of base structures as well as have a good angle to gun down enemy forces attempting to push through the city proper. The other defenses, including the beam cannons, are concealed underground throughout the base concourse and emerge from their positions to fire, primarily intended for air defense and to fire at targets approaching from the sea.
The base extends far underground as well, with the command center and hangar complexes built below the surface. Likewise, extensive mining operations are conducted for miles and miles in each direction, digging out halite as well as iron-carrying ores, with many of these mines easily tall enough for a mobile suit to skulk about. Raw materials are sent up via conveyor assemblies, and giant shaft platforms allow heavy equipment (and potentially mobile suits) to be raised or lowered from the surface.
Present: A surprise attack by the now-infamous renegades Kale Armistad and Deacon Gerard, among others, resulted in Great Lakes II being captured after most of its military assets were destroyed. Most of the base’s topside facilities remained intact, but the subterranean hangars and command facility were all taken out of action. This has also effectively sealed off the mines below the base from any kind of surface access.
Fleeing after the ESA places a bounty on their heads, Kale and Deacon end destroying the sea wall around the base with explosives, Lake Michigan ultimately sweeping away the remainder of the base as well as most of the Empire Wastes around it.
