Future Imperfect

This page details the history of Gundam Pilot and Gundam Cataclysm, as well as the events between Gundam Catacylsm and the opening of Future Imperfect.

:: The Archaic Era: Gundam Pilot RPG

In these early days, the seeds of what was to become were not truly planted yet. Things all began when the Gundam GP-02 was stolen from the Earth Federation’s Torrington Base, in Australia. This kicked off a chain of events culminating in several impressive battles near Earth. Neo Zeon’s colony drop was foiled when their colony was blown up by the Tallgeese III, piloted by Treize Kushrenada. This marked the rise of OZ, and the retreat of Neo Zeon; the remnants retreated to Axis in good order, and Axis left the Earth Sphere. The Titans arose, and began their rivalries with OZ.

:: The New Era: Gundam Cataclysm RPG

Time passed, as it always does. The Earth Federation rose, and shined brightly for some time. The Zanscare Empire invaded from Jupiter, and was defeated by the League Militaire. For a time, the end of war seemed to be in sight, and for a period of about ten years, virtually all mobile suits were destroyed or disassembled, under the aegis of the Preventers. The use of small, armed fighters known as Vernier Fighters became semi-common amongst the factions in existence at the time.

:: Corporate Wars

But, as with any time, all good things must come to an end. An unknown mobile suit, later identified as the Dragon Gundam, was caught on camera committing attacks against several facilities owned by major factions. Furious diplomatic recriminations occurred, and talks broke down; each side left the table and commenced immediate rearmament.

In this time, many large weapons corporations rose to power, eclipsing the slightly anemic governmental entities in existence at the time. Many household names arose from this time as numerous prototypes were created and their pilots vied against one another: WATUSSU, Black Diamond Industries, Phoenix, The Triad, Unknown Outer Rim Industries — these and others became household names.

Around this time, a man known only as Aleksei managed to spark a violent overthrow of the Earth Federation’s local government in the former Russia region, creating a new Communist state. This was largely ignored by the Earth Federation, which suddenly had much larger problems…

:: Invasion

Axis had finally returned to the Earth Sphere. Somehow, it had traveled to the stars beyond, and returned with impressively powerful and exotic technology. Neo Zeon had indeed survived, somehow, and now styling itself the Gun Saints, it launched a full-scale invasion of the Earth Sphere, attempting to satisfy its thirst for vengeance with four great fleets. The corporations and governments quickly held council, and agreed to work together to fight this threat, and indeed, two out of the four fleets were eliminated, albeit, not without cost.

:: Catastrophe

One of the corporations, WATUSSU, possessed a mobile suit known as the “Maedistro Summoned,” which possessed strange regenerative abilities and aggression unlike that of any other mobile suit. Indeed, sometimes it would perform actions without any input from its pilot.

The true identity of the Maedistro Summoned was the Devil Gundam, a creation of impressive power and hostility to humans, and during the war with the Gun Saints, it spontaneously evolved on several occasions, becoming both more powerful and more uncontrollable several times.

Finally, disaster struck. During a battle with the leader of the Gun Saints, the Devil Gundam managed to pull in and engulf its opponent, tearing it apart and integrating its systems within its body. With any ordinary mobile suit, this would not be a terrible concern… but the Devil Gundam had been doing this again and again, sprouting new weapons and protrusions resembling those of its victims. And this time, it acquired a power source beyond all others: the leader of the Gun Saints possessed a mobile suit powered by a degeneracy-type reactor. The man himself escaped, but has not been seen since; it is suspected he died during the greater war that followed.

:: The Forge of God

With tremendous power under its command, and now having completely enslaved its core life unit, the Devil Gundam now lashed out like an intelligent plague, corrupting everything it touched, eventually engulfing Axis itself as it continued its endless evolution. All the remaining factions in the Earth Sphere put aside their differences for now, and formed a grand alliance: the United Earth Sphere Alliance. Their objective: to destroy the Devil Gundam completely, by any means necessary.

The cost of the war was punishing; thousands upon thousands of the best (and worst) pilots in the Earth Sphere perished. Massive damage was incurred to the colonies and to the Earth; the only reliable way to extirpate the Devil Gundam’s attempts to seed the Earth proved to be high-yield thermonuclear weapons or colony drops.

Finally, a year later, the UESA managed to get the upper hand, forcing things back, and back, until in lunar orbit, the final battle against the Devil Gundam commenced.

Virtually 90% of the personnel who participated in this great battle were killed; but, they were successful. A small, elite strike force broke into Axis; when they started, they were nine; when they finished, there was just one.

Robert Smith, in the mobile suit Heavyarms Moebius, managed to make it to the core of Axis and confront the Devil Gundam, tearing free both its core life unit, his former friend Chris Butler, and the degeneracy reactor itself, via sheer brute force. He then immediately emptied his entire remaining arsenal into the reactor, causing a massive detonation a short time later.

The Devil Gundam, finding itself suddenly bereft of both a source of life energy and the massive energy reserves provided by the consumed degeneracy reactor, was critically wounded by the explosion. Fire exploded from every crevice of Axis, and the Devil Gundam’s expansion suddenly ceased; the remaining forces pressed closer to obliterate every last trace of Axis and the Devil Gundam with the frenzy of the doomed, lashing out even as the massive explosion slowly consumed most of the pilots remaining on the battlefield.

It was done. The Devil Gundam had been defeated, leaving behind nothing more than a vast floating field of radioactive rubble that came to be known as the Mausoleum.

:: Collapse

One corporation held back part of its resources from the fight with the Devil Gundam: Unknown Outer Rim Industries. With most of their facilities in the Asteroid Belt, they managed to avoid the worst of the fighting with the Gun Saints and the Devil Gundam, and with the Earth Sphere virtually exhausted, they launched an invasion, attempting to take over once and for all.

The remaining pilots of the UESA threw themselves once more into battle; Unknown caused significant damage, but, in the end, proved unable to overcome the hardened veterans of the terrible war against the Devil Gundam.

Still, this final conflict proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back: the Earth Sphere, already reeling from the damage incurred by the Gun Saints and the Devil Gundam, tottered into the abyss. Too much basic infrastructure had been destroyed; the governments and corporations fell apart, breaking into a thousand little kingdoms as every man and woman sought to grab power for themselves or save those whom they cared about; many more died due to the Earth’s climate changing.

This began the period of chaos and lawlessness known as the Interregenum; for fifty years, there was no remaining major government worthy of the name, and many records from this time have been lost.

:: Spring

But even as all good things must come to an end, so must all bad things, and thus the Interregenum slowly drew to a close as well. Humanity pulled itself back up to civilization by its bootstraps, as it always does, and new powers arose, and began competing. It is a time of optimism: despite massive damage to the Earth, those who have survived the Interregenum know the worst is over; the Earth’s climate is slowly recovering, and lost technology is being unearthed at a steady rate. Many old mobile suits have been constructed utilizing recovered data, and old ones refurbished; once again, man sails through the skies above.

The future is here; it may be imperfect, but it is yours.

Make the best of it.
