Situated under what many consider to be the birthplace of Communism, the Moskovsky Military District encompasses the central western extent of the Human Reform League’s territorial claims in Europe. Although Russia is essentially second-in-command to China within the League’s internal structure, its contributions of material resources and historical foundation of socialism ensure it is given nearly identical emphasis in terms of military assets. Moscow, the ancient capital of Russia, thus made a logical choice for the creation of a forward mobile suit base.
The MMD base is primarily subterranean, with thick bunker complexes, tunnels and metros snaking around throughout much of Moscow’s underground. Much of the city itself has been occupied for defense purposes, and military establishments with mobile suit elevators to the base exist in most strategic locations, including within Red Square and Domodedovo Airport; the former is the site of annual military parades on May Day. Three main shafts concentrated roughly equidistant from the city center, on the north west, north east, and south sides of the Moskva River, form the perimeter of the base’s central facilities, and are each protected by a pair of giant state-of-the-art GN Beam Cannons. Other defensive positions roughly ring the perimeter of the city, forming checkpoints and what essentially amounts to a terminus of the urban area. The League has all but totally occupied Domodedovo Airport for military purposes.
The old Kremlin castle has been transformed into the League’s secondary headquarters and usually has at least a few Tierens stomping about within its red brick walls. Aside from serving as a fallback point in case something unthinkable should happen to the main headquarters, the MMD base is also in a strategic location for League leadership to observe the eventual “liberation” of Europe from the Earth Sphere Alliance. It is also in active use as the overall command center of the “Western” portion of the Human Reform League’s total territorial area (the Soviet states are considered to be the “West”, while China and the rest of South Asia form the “East”).
