This lonely fortification sits on the edge of the Antarctic Peninsula, pointing outward towards the far South Pacific. Formerly an Alliance submarine base, it was captured in a sneak attack by the Space Revolutionary Army in UC 213, and changed hands several times during the Guild War period. Eventually retaken by the Human Reform League, it was returned to the Earth Union and has since been utilized as a naval base for south seas operations by Union vessels.

Along with the Barclay base, Shackleton formed the western half of the Alliance’s south pole early warning array, and is similarly adorned with old X-band radars that have been supplemented by the Space Revolutionary Army’s more compact, modern models which remain to this day. Most of the base, including its hangars, warehouses and operational support is nestled within the craggy fjords of the peninsula, its white exteriors blending in neatly with the snow, with the hardened submarine pens relegated to secure storage facilities so their roofs could be employed as docks for surface vessels jutting out into the frigid water; the airstrip is placed atop the rock outcroppings slightly inland, which were bulldozed flat in earlier years. Inclinators are used to shuttle cargo and mobile suits up the sheer fjord walls, although the flight capability of most GN-powered mobile weapons renders this an ancillary feature. Most of its defenses point seaward, but some are situated around the airstrip to cover the inland side as well as to be able to fire down the fjord into the base itself if need be.
