Situated in the pleasant Tuscan coastline, Orbetello is just a short cruise across the Mediterranean from the much larger Corsica base and serves as a distribution center for completed mobile suits from that installation’s factories. Aside from this important function as well as serving as the Alliance headquarters in Italy, Orbetello is the site of the Alliance’s main pilot training academy.
The base lies across from the famous Orbetello lagoon, through which a channel has been dredged to allow ships to access the dock facilities. The light-colored buildings blend in with the sandstone cliffs and hills behind the base, through which many trainee pilots have accidentally thrown their Leos into valleys and depressions while undergoing mobility training. The training facility includes a mobile suit firing range, complete with realistic target dummies and drones, along with extensive drill grounds and a very large dormitory complex for recruits. Thanks to its pleasant location, and the thriving nightlife in the nearby towns with Rome only about an hour south, it is a popular assignment among Alliance personnel, and ancient ruins aren’t far away for the more historically-minded officers. The installation is also famed for tyrannical Mobile Suit Instructor Suvorov; though variously described as a psychotic sadist and a black hole of dreams and idealism, he has incurred more than a few injuries and great personal sacrifices in the line of work, especially to save trainees from prospective disaster (followed by extremely rigorous remedial physical training, of course).
The Orbetello installation hugs the semicircular coast along the lagoon, with dock facilities focused to the southeast end along the dredged portions of the water. The defensive emplacements can completely cover the lagoon, as well as the approaches along the shore. A few point to the northeast, overlooking the well-traveled training grounds in the hills. Mining is heavy beyond the base perimeter, but due to the danger of it being stumbled into by unfortunate trainees, the areas are obviously marked, the lack of secrecy made up by sheer numbers.
