The entire city of Warsaw, being not far from the furthest extent of the Human Reform League’s advance, has been “militarized” into a massive fortress intended to completely block out the approaches from the east further into Eastern Europe.

Though much of the old city remains intact, its eastern perimeter has been completely renovated into a massive defense line, with the old suburban areas beyond “returned to nature”, forming a pristine wilderness that stretches for miles. The ratio of trees to mines is roughly 1:2, with thick groves and fields of large rocks and concrete pins serving as obstacles for approaching mobile suits (the latter specifically intended to tip over the quick-moving High Mobility Tieren). Motion and vibration detectors, along with thermal imagers, are camouflaged throughout the area, allowing even small land incursions to be easily plotted and bombarded into oblivion. This virtual no-man’s land stretches out for miles in either direction, following along the Vistula and Bug rivers to the north and south of Warsaw, effectively delineating the extent of the Alliance’s grasp on the eastern portion of the continent.

The fortress itself, referred to as Warschau (a Germanic pronunciation is used to distinguish it from the city), takes the form of many staggered and heavily reinforced emplacements, with the eastern terminus of the city looking more akin to a bristling porcupine of laser batteries. Thick concrete blockhouses, recently upgraded with an anti-beam laminate due to the sudden appearance of Human Reform League mobile suits with beam weapons, peek up from the ground in a small camouflage-colored forest forming a vaguely semicircular pattern. Formerly civilian buildings near the edge of the city have been converted into enormous rocket artillery platforms, with ammunition magazines stored deep below ground and the launchers rising up through the structures themselves on hydraulic lifts. An arrangement of overlapping positions allows the Alliance base to rain redwood-thick missiles packed with submunitions on virtually any kind of portable artillery that might try to open up on it, along with devastating columns of mobile suits from far outside their normal range. Antiaircraft missile batteries are dotted along the lines and throughout the city as well in a miniature replication of the monstrous artillery models, making it dangerous to approach from the air from essentially any direction.

The base’s command center and infrastructure exist below ground, partially under the lines and partially below the city itself, with mobile suit elevators throughout. Tunnels snake under the city, forming a mobile suit-scaled metro that can dispatch Virgos virtually anywhere they’re needed quickly, while an airstrip complex at the far western side of the city (furthest from possible approaches) is provided to send up Aries for air attacks and reconnaissance work.

Warschau was not originally so heavily fortified, but the HRL has attacked the base many times, and the defenses were improved each time. Even so, they have come close to taking the base several times, and it is the opinion of certain commanders that they may yet do so.
