Situated in the deepest jungles of southern Manitoba, Shoal Lake is the largest Earth Union base in Canada and serves as a regional command point for patrols and security detachments throughout much of central North America. The base was originally constructed under the auspices of the Earth Sphere Alliance as a major hub for airborne mobile suit forces and to act as a support point in the event of a land-based invasion.
Shoal Lake takes a fairly typical layout for former Alliance bases, and is dominated by a large airport with several runways and an extensive concourse on which the base facilities are spread out over a wide area. Previously, the base hosted multiple missile silos as part of the Alliance’s nuclear deterrence arsenal, although these were particularly outdated by the time of the Guild invasion of North America and were not put back into service after the base was retaken in UC 221. The former launch complex was then converted for use as a large-scale GN drive recharging facility, with new subterranean mobile suit hangars constructed nearby to replace the large but unarmored ones on the surface. Launch shafts allow garrisoned units to be sent directly up to the airstrip to facilitate rapid deployment in the event of an enemy attack.
With its position in an agricultural plain, the base has very little in the way of natural cover for dozens of miles in any direction. To maximize its defensibility, Shoal Lakes has a very heavy complement of emplacements positioned about the main concourse. The turrets are attached to typical Union retractable mounts, but with the added function of tall pedestals that allow them to raise up above the altitude of most of the base structures. This arrangement permits for full 360-degree fields of fire, ensuring that no batteries are unable to fire on any approaching enemy, including straight up.
