Literally occupying the entire island, the Fogo base is a marvel of Old Earth Federation engineering re-purposed to fit modern needs. The vast majority of the installation is built into the sides and interior of the mountain, with only camouflaged hangar access passages poking out at various locations, and the many defense turrets are disguised as rock formations – for all intents and purposes, the island appears essentially untouched until closer inspection reveals that it is nearly as man-made in reality as it appears natural at distance. Fogo was one of the last Atlantic Federation holdouts in the eastern world, and once the central command had fragmented, ended up under the stewardship of the infamous Last Battalion.
The pinnacle of the base’s features is the massive geothermal power station that feeds off of heat and pressure directly from the volcano, providing the base with an incredible amount of essentially unlimited energy. As a result, virtually all of the base’s defenses are beam-based, and even mobile suits not typically capable of using such weapons are provided with cable-powered beam rifles for static warfare. Likewise, the constant leeching of heat and pressure prevents the volcano from erupting, making it quite stable and safe to build upon. The caldera, formerly active in spewing out lava and other pyroclastic material, was converted by the Old Earth Federation into a hardened missile complex for nuclear weapons, which the Atlantic Federation discovered intact over a century later. Refitted with new missiles, Fogo’s nuclear stockpile was used several times against ZAFT and Guild forces in Africa, and while the Last Battalion has yet to deploy what remains of its arsenal, the warheads should theoretically still be usable.
Since the Last Battalion took up residence in the base, a few modest modernizations have occurred. In addition to a larger mobile suit garrison via enlarged hangar facilities, a camouflaged submarine pen has been installed in what appears to be a natural tidal cave. Aside from the obvious faculty of amphibious mobile suits, this also allows for covert resupply and transfer of materials to and from the base.
