The Alliance has dug in heavily in Southeastern Europe, correctly assuming that the Human Reform League would have a better chance of pushing in from there than further north. Ljubljana, the capital of relatively loyal Slovenia, has been militarized into a major defense line against the possibility of a land invasion from Asia. The city is cradled by the craggy Julische Alphs to the east and south, making it a natural bastion against any Asiatic force.
The base, Laibach (a Germanic pronunciation is used to distinguish it from the city itself) occupies a stretch of the mountainside facing to the west, with the peaks of the alps designated as the perimeter. Giant inclinators allow mobile suits to quickly ascend the mountains in case of an enemy approach; combined with the virtual fence of defensive emplacements and the demolition of existing infrastructure allowing travel through the mountains (the highly air-mobile Alliance is not hindered by such inconveniences), an enemy would be hard-pressed to scale the steep eastern face of the mountains amid a hail of rockets and beam weapons fire. Artillery rocket batteries are positioned around the base itself, intended to lob missiles on a high ballistic trajectory over the mountains and land them on the heads of an approaching force. Defense is coordinated from within the city itself at the ancient Ljubljana Castle, which also serves as the Alliance’s political headquarters in southeast Europe.
Though the ridge line of the alps themselves are intended as the primary perimeter, provisions for a retreat down the western side exist, and Alliance forces can progressively pull further back down, including into the city itself, to ward off an attacking force that through some miracle has snaked through the emplacements atop the mountains.
