Bar-Kemal Limited’s expansion into the northern portion of Africa was assisted as much by their economic base as it was by the existence of Atlantic Federation infrastructure and other construction by previous political and military powers. The Federation’s broad-gauge rail line was a particular asset, as it allowed for easy transit of the otherwise perilous desert with raw materials and other assets obtained from the desert. The Federation’s original terminus of the line in Dakar was no longer in operation, and further of no strategic value to the company. To create a formidable defense point, as well as to gain access to the deep iron deposits, Bar-Kemal constructed a totally new facility on the Pointe Blanc peninsula where the train line ends.
Situated on the former grounds of the city of Nouadhibou, the eponymous base acts as both a shipping facility with a deep-water port, an ore extraction and collection installation, a transit terminal for the rail system, and a fortified military garrison that dominates the southern portion of the peninsula. A massive wall severs the six-mile-wide peninsula from the mainland, with a single entry point to allow for trains to depart on normative schedules, while both the desert to the north and the beach and sea to the west are mined to discourage straying too close to the company’s property. The base is relatively decentralized – military and domestic infrastructure are spread out throughout the peninsula, with the heaviest concentration of emplacements around the port in the central region and the perimeter in the north. So-called “hard points” – areas with a cluster of defenses capable of firing in any direction – stipple the remainder of the peninsula, and there are quite a number of very large artillery weapons provided to enable bombardment of an enemy incursion throughout the peninsula’s length. The mobile suit garrison is kept on alert at all times so as to quickly respond to the arrival of hostile forces at even remote points of the immediate area.
One thing that has not changed over the decades, or perhaps even centuries, is the veritable “boot hill” of wrecked and abandoned ships along the coastline of this area, including many along the Pointe Blanc itself – Bar-Kemal has done little to remove these environmental eyesores, although many have been fitted with large quantities of blast mines as a rude surprise to mobile suits attempting to use them as cover from the company’s gun emplacements.
